Five days of faith, music, and tradition in the heart of the Salento region near Brindisi
The Patronal Feast of Saint Vitus and Saint Vincent Ferrer is the most intense and widely attended moment of the civil and religious calendar in San Vito dei Normanni, a town in the province of Brindisi overlooking the Salento hinterland. Every year, during the week of the second Sunday in July, the town is transformed: the streets are filled with artistic lights, bandstands, market stalls, and the aromas of local gastronomy, while thousands of people return to the city to renew an ancient bond with their saints.
The city bears the name of Saint Vitus the Martyr, titular saint of the Basilica of Santa Maria della Vittoria, joined by Saint Vincent Ferrer, who was proclaimed co-patron in 1852. The two statues are at the heart of the solemn rites: the three-day preparation period, the Eucharistic celebrations, and above all the Sunday evening procession, when the statues are carried through the main streets of the town accompanied by confraternities, civil and military authorities, and a sea of faithful.
Alongside the devotional dimension, the festival features a rich civil program designed for all ages. The lighting of the illuminations kicks off the festivities; the following days feature puppet shows for children, the traditional horse parade with a procession of pages and the symbolic offering of grain, brass band concerts by renowned groups from outside the region, and major musical events in the city squares, from Piazza Municipio to Piazza Leonardo Leo.
The Patronal Feast of San Vito dei Normanni is much more than a religious celebration: it is the very identity of the Municipality renewing itself, a collective rite that intertwines the sacred and the profane according to the typical model of the great patronal festivals of Apulia and Salento. For those visiting the region in summer, it represents an authentic opportunity to experience the local community, gastronomy, and folklore at their most vibrant.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of San Vito dei Normanni runs from July 9 to 13, according to the official program released by the Festival Committee. The three-day preparation period opens the celebrations on Thursday, July 9, while the most solemn moment is Sunday, July 12, with the solemn mass and the procession of the statues of Saint Vitus and Saint Vincent Ferrer through the town center, accompanied by confraternities and authorities.
On the civil side, the city lights up with artistic illuminations, puppet shows for children, the horse parade with the page procession, and the grain offering. Musical highlights include the "The Summer is Magic" concert with Francesco Trizza, the performance by the folk group I Taricata on Sunday evening, and the grand closing concert by Sud Sound System on Monday, July 13. There will also be brass bands, traditional bandstands, fireworks at midnight, the San Vito Food & Drink area, and the funfair.
