Santa Maria delle Grazie and San Vincenzo Ferrer, the devotional heart of San Donaci
Among the vine and olive-covered hills of northern Salento, San Donaci — a town in the province of Brindisi, in Puglia — experiences its most intense community moment in early August: the Patronal Feast in honor of Santa Maria delle Grazie and San Vincenzo Ferrer. It is a centuries-old tradition that, year after year, brings together faith, history, and popular identity, filling the squares with music, colors, and scents.
The Holy Virgin is the town's primary protector, joined by San Vincenzo Ferrer, a Dominican priest born in Valencia in 1350 and a tireless preacher throughout Europe. In San Donaci, the Spanish saint is deeply linked to the local farming culture: in many European communities, he is venerated as the patron saint of farmers, and the beautiful papier-mâché statue kept in town renews his cult every year. The community honors San Vincenzo twice a year, in April — with the historic fair dedicated to him — and in August, together with the Madonna delle Grazie.
Spiritual preparation begins well in advance: the novena to the patron saints starts at the end of July and culminates with "la seduta," a prayer and fasting vigil at the Edicola di Montecoco, where the faithful spend entire days. On August 4th, the statues of the Madonna and San Vincenzo Ferrer are carried in a solemn procession through the streets of the town, accompanied by the recitation of the Holy Rosary and Marian hymns. On August 5th, the most intense day of the festival, solemn masses are celebrated with the traditional panegyric.
Alongside the religious dimension, civic festivities enliven the town center: illuminations light up the streets, brass band music resonates from the bandstand decorated with colored lights, fireworks close the evenings, and market stalls line the main street, offering sweets, toys, and local products. It is the festive face of a community that makes its patronal feast a reference point for those who want to discover the traditions of the Salento region of Puglia.
The event is organized by the Patronal Feast Committee, which brings together the parish, local associations, institutions, and citizens of the Municipality of San Donaci to renew, every summer, an appointment deeply felt by the entire town.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of San Donaci will be held on August 4th and 5th, according to the devotional calendar that the town has renewed for generations. The dates are confirmed by the official channels of the Municipality and the Parish; the complete civic program — featuring the guest band, shows, and the timing of the fireworks — will be announced by the Patronal Feast Committee closer to the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Patronal Feast Committee in the weeks prior. The usual schedule includes:
The names of the brass bands and the precise timing of events will be communicated with the official flyer.
The festival takes place every year on August 4th and 5th, preceded by the preparatory novena that begins at the end of July.
Celebrations are concentrated in the Mother Church and the historic center of San Donaci (province of Brindisi, Puglia). The procession, bandstand, illuminations, and stalls involve the main streets and squares of the town.
San Donaci is located along the route between Brindisi and Lecce, in Salento. It can be reached by car via the SS7ter and the nearby Brindisi-Lecce expressway; it also has a train station on the Adriatic line.
All moments of the festival, both religious and civic, are open to the public and free of charge.
