About Medieval Fest

Every year in early September, the historic center and waterfront of Brindisi transform into a sprawling open-air museum. The Medieval Fest takes the city back to the era of Frederick II, featuring street performers, costumed re-enactors, traditional artisan workshops, and food tastings. It is a deep dive into the 13th century that blends history, entertainment, and Apulian folk traditions, with the Palazzina del Belvedere and the Casa del Turista providing a stunning backdrop on the water.

A journey to the 13th century in the heart of Brindisi

The Medieval Fest is a major historical re-enactment that, every year in early September, transports the historic center and the waterfront of Brindisi (in the province of Brindisi, Puglia) back to the golden age of the Swabian city. For a few days, the squares, streets, and the scenic Palazzina del Belvedere are filled with costumed re-enactors, street performers, jesters, falconers, and artisans, recreating the atmosphere of the 13th century in a true open-air museum.

Frederick II and Imperial Brindisi

The event was created to celebrate the deep bond between Brindisi and Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. It was in this city, the gateway to the East and a crossroads for the Crusades, that the imperial wedding between Frederick II and Yolande of Jerusalem (Isabella of Brienne) took place in 1225, forever linking Brindisi's destiny to the grand history of medieval Europe. The festival turns this memory into a living experience, bringing the public closer to the daily life, crafts, and arts of the medieval age.

What to expect

  • Historical re-enactments with performers and groups in period costumes
  • Street performers, jesters, flag-wavers, and roving shows
  • Ancient craft workshops, where artisans involve the public in traditional techniques
  • Medieval tastings and flavors, with the support of Slow Food Brindisi
  • Cultural meetings, exhibitions, and video mapping projected onto the waterfront facades

A widespread and accessible event

Activities take place between the Palazzina del Belvedere, the Casa del Turista, the former Convento delle Scuole Pie, and the historic center, along a route that combines the sea, monuments, and storytelling. In recent years, the organizers have paid particular attention to accessibility, offering tactile maps, audio QR codes, and sign language support to ensure the festival is truly open to everyone.

Organizers

The Medieval Fest is coordinated by the ATS EPICA association network, with the support of the Municipality of Brindisi and the Chamber of Commerce. It stands as one of the city's premier cultural events, traditionally coinciding with the patronal celebrations in early September.

Medieval Fest — edition 2026

The Medieval Fest is expected to return to Brindisi in 2026, traditionally held in early September to coincide with the patronal celebrations. Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers; the event will likely feature historical re-enactments, street performers, ancient craft workshops, and food tastings across the historic center and the waterfront.

The 2026 edition of the Medieval Fest in Brindisi has not yet been officially confirmed. Based on previous years, the event is expected to take place in early September, spanning the Palazzina del Belvedere, the Casa del Turista, and the historic center, with costumed re-enactments, roving shows, ancient crafts, and medieval flavors. Exact dates and the detailed program will be published by the organizers on the official website and the channels of the Municipality of Brindisi.
