About InOrbita

InOrbita is an artistic residency dedicated to the Italian frame drum and its contemporary evolution. Every November, it transforms San Vito dei Normanni, in the province of Brindisi, into a vibrant laboratory of rhythm, voice, and tradition. Over four days, the Laboratorio Urbano ExFadda and the Teatro Tex host workshops, masterclasses, concerts, and celebrations that blend traditional roots music, Salento pizzica, and sound experimentation. A project by the World Music Academy supported by the Ministry of Culture.

What is InOrbita

InOrbita is an artistic residency that gathers percussionists, singers, and musicians every autumn in San Vito dei Normanni, in the heart of the Brindisi province, around an ancient yet ever-relevant instrument: the Italian frame drum. Directed by Federico Laganà and Vincenzo Gagliani, the residency is designed as an intensive and convivial period of study, listening, and creation, where technical depth engages with experimentation and oral traditions.

It is not just a concert series, but a true laboratory: for four days, musicians of different generations share workshops, masterclasses, rehearsals, and festive moments, alternating educational sessions with concerts and events open to the public. The frame drum thus becomes the common thread for exploring rhythm, gesture, voice, and the relationship between sound and context.

Where: ExFadda and Teatro Tex

The residency takes place primarily at the Laboratorio Urbano ExFadda—a former winery converted into a cultural and social space that is now one of Puglia's most vibrant hubs—and at the nearby Teatro Tex. Some public events also involve other local venues, from historic town centers to natural landmarks, bringing roots music out of the halls and into the community of San Vito dei Normanni.

A World Music Academy Project

InOrbita is organized by the World Music Academy APS and is part of the Nuova Generazione Trad program, supported by the Ministry of Culture through the Fondo Unico per lo Spettacolo. The project focuses on roots music, practices, and arts as a dynamic field of transmission and experimentation, with special attention to young performers: past editions have included participation scholarships for frame drum players under 30 and collaborations with educational institutions such as conservatories.

Why it's worth it

For those who love pizzica, taranta, and the folk music of Southern Italy, InOrbita is a rare opportunity to experience the Apulian world music scene up close, meeting some of the most renowned figures in traditional tambourine and singing. The formula combining education, research, and concerts makes this residency a unique event in the cultural landscape of Puglia, attracting musicians and enthusiasts from all over Italy and the Mediterranean to San Vito dei Normanni.

InOrbita — edition 2026

The third edition of InOrbita is scheduled from November 4 to 7, 2026, in San Vito dei Normanni, once again hosted between the Laboratorio Urbano ExFadda and the Teatro Tex. With the confirmed artistic direction of Federico Laganà and Vincenzo Gagliani, the residency returns to focus on the Italian drum and its current trajectories, blending technical depth with experimentation, featuring concerts and public events throughout the area.

InOrbita 2026 marks the third edition of the artistic residency dedicated to the Italian frame drum, scheduled from November 4 to 7, 2026, in San Vito dei Normanni. This edition confirms the structure that has made the project recognizable: four intensive days of training, research, and concerts between the ExFadda and the Teatro Tex, with incursions into other spaces of the municipal territory, from historic centers to natural areas. The residency is part of the 2026 season of Nuova Generazione Trad by the World Music Academy, supported by the Ministry of Culture through the Fondo Unico per lo Spettacolo.

Programme InOrbita 2026

The detailed program for the 2026 edition (concert line-up, workshops, masterclasses, and schedules) will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event on the official World Music Academy channels. The structure follows that of previous editions: days alternating between workshops and masterclasses on the frame drum, evening concerts, and festive moments open to the public.
