Every late December, the historic center of Mesagne, a city in the province of Brindisi in the heart of Salento, transforms into a Nativity scene thanks to the 'Luce del Mondo' Living Nativity. The setting is the evocative Piazza Orsini del Balzo, overlooked by the Norman-Swabian castle, where performers in costume bring the story of Jesus' birth to life. This is not merely a static display; it is a thematic journey that envelops visitors in an atmosphere of yesteryear, filled with the lights, sounds, and scents typical of the Apulian Christmas tradition.

Ancient crafts and period costumes

The heart of the event is the reconstruction of daily life from the past: along the route, ancient crafts, workshops, and the gestures of peasant culture come to life, while the characters of the Holy Family, shepherds, and the Three Wise Men animate the scenes. The philological care is entrusted to the collaboration between the 'Da Orra ad Oria' association, the organizers of the event, the 'Meghy Costumes D'Epoque' workshop, and the Gruppo Storico Città di Mesagne, who ensure accurate costumes and faithful settings. A collective effort involving dozens of local performers that has made 'Luce del Mondo' a deeply felt and well-attended appointment for the Mesagne community.

A Christmas spread throughout the city

The Living Nativity is part of the wider Christmas calendar of the Municipality of Mesagne, which animates the center during the same weeks with markets, an ice rink, shows, and the Christmas train. Notably, during the days of the Living Nativity, the 'I Presepi nel cuore' exhibition-competition begins—a widespread trail of artisanal nativity scenes displayed in the streets and alleys of the old town, open until Epiphany. Together, these elements make Mesagne one of the most evocative Christmas destinations in the province of Brindisi, capable of combining the spiritual dimension of the Nativity with the charm of its historic center.
