The mid-August Marian festival in the seaside villages of Torchiarolo, featuring a sea procession along the North Salento coast.

In the heart of the Salento summer, the seaside villages of Torchiarolo (Province of Brindisi, Puglia) experience one of the most intense and heartfelt moments of the year: the Festival of Maria Santissima Assunta, venerated by the coastal communities with the sweet title of Stella Maris, Star of the Sea and protector of all those who live and work on the water. It is a popular festival that unites faith, maritime tradition, and the identity of the villages of Torre San Gennaro and Lendinuso, which are bustling in August with residents and vacationers alike.
The festival is not limited to a single day: it is preceded by a long preparatory novena that accompanies the communities until Ferragosto (mid-August). In Torre San Gennaro, the celebrations include an evocative evening itinerant novena that travels through the various districts of the village—from Miramare to the main church, passing by the small fishing harbor and the seaside streets—transforming the entire village into a path of shared prayer.
The most anticipated moment is the sea procession on the day of the Assumption. After the land procession, which departs from the Stella Maris church and reaches the small harbor, the statue of the Virgin is embarked on a decorated fishing boat and taken to sail along the entire Torchiarolo coastline, followed by a parade of boats. It is the moment of the blessing of the sea and the tribute to those lost at sea, a tradition that speaks to the deep bond between these communities and their waters.
The seaside village of Lendinuso also celebrates its Stella Maris: the statue is embarked from the Madonnina della Canuta towards the rock known as "Lu pizzu te li cuti", where the solemn Eucharist is celebrated on the evening of August 15th, often presided over by the Archbishop. The celebrations are enlivened by the youth choirs of Torchiarolo and San Pietro Vernotico and by brass bands, in a festive atmosphere that accompanies residents and tourists until the evening.
The Stella Maris Festival is much more than a religious celebration: it is the summer festival of the Torchiarolo seaside villages, a collective ritual that weaves together Marian devotion, maritime culture, and hospitality. Those visiting the North Salento coast at mid-August will find here one of the most authentic expressions of the Apulian tradition.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced. Based on tradition, the Stella Maris Festival returns every year at Ferragosto in the seaside villages of Torre San Gennaro and Lendinuso (Municipality of Torchiarolo, Province of Brindisi), with a novena, solemn masses, land processions, and the evocative sea procession with the blessing of the waters. The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the parish communities closer to the festival.
The celebrations are concentrated in the seaside villages of Torre San Gennaro and Lendinuso, coastal hamlets of the Municipality of Torchiarolo (Province of Brindisi). The heart of the ceremonies is the Stella Maris church in Torre San Gennaro; the sea procession departs from the small fishing harbor.
By car from the SS 613 Brindisi–Lecce road, take the exit for Torchiarolo, then follow signs for the seaside villages. The nearest train stations are San Pietro Vernotico and Squinzano (Adriatic line), which are connected by bus services during the summer. The reference airport is Brindisi–Salento.
The festival has free admission. In August, the seaside villages are very crowded: it is advisable to arrive early and park away from the seafront. For the sea procession, the coast and the small harbor offer the best viewing points.
