The grand late-summer patronal feast in Latiano, in the heart of Salento

The Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix Redeemer is the most anticipated event of the year in Latiano, a town in the province of Brindisi, in the heart of the Apulian Salento. Every late August, the town pauses its daily routine to honor its special protector in a celebration that has always intertwined the religious and the popular: the devotion of the services and the procession on one side, and the music, lights, and fireworks on the other.
The bond between Latiano and the Most Holy Crucifix dates back to the mid-19th century. On November 5, 1856, the population elected the Crucifix as the town's special protector; this election was later confirmed by the Congregation of Sacred Rites, with the favorable opinion of Pope Pius IX, in 1870. Popular tradition recounts the legend behind this devotion: it is said that a passing caravan could not lift one of its crates until a crucifix was removed from it; at the cry of "miracle," the news spread throughout the town, and on the site of the prodigy, the people of Latiano built a temple to house and honor the sacred image. The venerated statue is today the most cherished religious symbol of the community, even being chosen as a sign for important moments in the Diocese of Oria.
The festivities span several days. The central rite is the Holy Novena, which prepares the community for the main day, traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of August. There is also the blessing of the agricultural fields in the countryside, a sign of the deep connection between the feast and the local farming culture. The highlight is the solemn city procession, when the Sacred Statue travels through the streets of the historic center accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and authorities.
Alongside the liturgical events, the feast explodes in its secular spirit: luminarie (light displays) decorate the historic center, stalls animate the streets, and Piazza Umberto I becomes the stage for evening concerts. Pizzica, the traditional dance and music of Salento, keeps people of all ages dancing until late at night. The festivities inevitably conclude with a fireworks display, lighting up the Latiano sky to bid farewell to the Salento summer.
Organized by the SS. Crocifisso Latiano Festival Committee together with the local parish, the feast attracts not only the residents of Latiano but also many emigrants who return to their hometown for the occasion, as well as visitors from neighboring towns. It is one of the most heartfelt patronal feasts in this part of Puglia, capable of capturing the identity of a community in just a few days: faith, a sense of belonging, and the joy of being together.
The dates and the official program for the 2026 edition of the Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix Redeemer in Latiano have not yet been published. Following tradition, the festivities should be concentrated in the latter part of August, with the main day on the last Sunday of the month. The program—comprising the Holy Novena, liturgical celebrations, the solemn city procession, evening concerts in Piazza Umberto I, and the concluding fireworks display—is generally announced by the SS. Crocifisso Latiano Festival Committee and the parish in the weeks leading up to the feast. This page will be updated as soon as the 2026 calendar is made public.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Latiano (BR), with its hub in Piazza Umberto I and along the procession route. The town is located in northern Salento, a few kilometers from Brindisi, Mesagne, and Oria.

The festivities are traditionally held in the last ten days of August, with the main day occurring on the last Sunday of the month.
Religious events and concerts in the square are free and open to everyone.
