The Mediterranean red tuna and bluefish festival at the Tonnara di Bonagia
The Tuna Fish Fest is a premier food, wine, and cultural event dedicated to Mediterranean red tuna and bluefish. Every summer, it transforms the Tonnara di Bonagiaโa hamlet in the municipality of Valderice, in the province of Trapaniโinto a grand gastronomic village by the sea. Promoted by the Bonagia Eventi & Promotion APS association with the patronage of the Municipality of Valderice, the festival celebrates the maritime identity of one of Western Sicily's most historic areas, where the ancient tuna fishery tells centuries-old stories of fishing and labor.
The theme of the 2026 edition, "Tuna and bluefish: culture and taste," perfectly encapsulates the festival's spirit: it is not just about tastings, but a journey into maritime culture that blends gastronomy, memory, and entertainment. For four days, the Tonnara di Bonagia hosts a gastronomic village with stalls, restaurants, and tastings of traditional seafood dishes, alongside a Signature Market showcasing local crafts and regional food excellence.
The heart of the event is the International Red Tuna Grand Prix, a highlight dedicated to showcasing Mediterranean tuna. Chefs compete in live cooking shows and culinary challenges, interpreting tuna and bluefish with a contemporary twist, accompanied by tastings and in-depth discussions on the sea's culinary traditions.
The program alternates between cooking shows, talks, and cultural moments, as well as concerts, DJ sets, and immersive performances with lights and sounds that bring the coastline to life in the evenings. Special attention is also given to younger visitors through school competitions like "Stories of Tuna and Tonnare," which engage local schools in creative activities dedicated to the sea and the identity of Bonagia.
As one of the premier summer events in the province of Trapani, the Tuna Fish Fest combines the rediscovery of Western Sicily's maritime roots with the tourist appeal of a unique location like the Tonnara di Bonagia, set amidst beaches, cliffs, and the silhouette of Monte Cofano. It is a perfect opportunity to discover the authentic flavors of the Sicilian sea in a setting steeped in history.
