The patronal feast of Calatafimi-Segesta, blending faith, tradition, and the sweet cassatella
The Madonna di Giubino Feast is the most cherished event in the civil and religious calendar of Calatafimi-Segesta, a town in the province of Trapani, Sicily. Every year, on the fourth Sunday of September, the entire community pays homage to Maria Santissima di Giubino, the city's patron saint. This devotion dates back to the spring of 1655, when the Calatafimi countryside was invaded by swarms of locusts from Africa that threatened the harvest. The population chose a protector, and on April 25, 1655, Maria Signora di Giubino was elected patron saint: the statue, taken from an ancient marble triptych kept in a country sanctuary about two kilometers from the town, was carried in procession and, according to tradition, cleared the fields of the invasion.
The heart of the feast is the solemn evening procession of the statue of the Madonna and Baby Jesus, carried on a silver float through the streets of the historic center. In the morning, Holy Masses are celebrated in the urban sanctuary, including a solemn one attended by civil and religious authorities and various city guilds, while in the evening, all of Calatafimi accompanies the statue in a deeply moving and well-attended procession. The festivities conclude with traditional fireworks.
The patronal feast is spread over a week-long calendar that alternates between religious moments and entertainment initiatives. Over the years, the program has featured:
Alongside the religious dimension is the Cassatella Festival, dedicated to the typical pastry of Calatafimi. Cassatelle (known as "cassateddi" in Sicilian) are fried pastries shaped like ravioli, filled with sheep's milk ricotta, sugar, and chocolate chips, then deep-fried in hot oil: a product recognized as one of Sicily's Traditional Agri-food Products (PAT). During the festival, the town streets come alive with tastings and aromas, and the cassatella becomes the delicious symbol of Calatafimi's identity.
The feast is also an opportunity to discover Calatafimi-Segesta, a village in western Sicily famous for its proximity to the magnificent Segesta archaeological park, with its Doric temple and Greek theater. The patronal feast of Maria SS. di Giubino thus combines faith, popular tradition, gastronomy, and heritage in one of the most characteristic events of the Trapani autumn.
The 2026 Madonna di Giubino Feast in Calatafimi-Segesta is expected on Sunday, September 27, 2026, the fourth Sunday of September as per tradition, with a week of religious and civil celebrations. The complete program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published by the organizers: as usual, it will include Holy Masses in the sanctuary, the solemn evening procession of the statue of Maria SS. di Giubino, concerts, parades, the Cassatella Festival, and the traditional final fireworks. It is recommended to consult the official channels of the Municipality of Calatafimi-Segesta for the updated calendar.
