The first Italian Capital of Contemporary Art: a year of exhibitions, artist residencies, and performing arts in the heart of the Belìce Valley.
Gibellina, located in the province of Trapani in the heart of the Belìce Valley in Sicily, was named the first Italian Capital of Contemporary Art on October 31, 2024, by Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli. This recognition honors a unique history: destroyed by the earthquake on January 15, 1968, the city was rebuilt as a vast open-air museum thanks to the vision of former mayor Ludovico Corrao, who invited artists such as Alberto Burri, Pietro Consagra, Arnaldo Pomodoro, and Carla Accardi to contribute.
The annual project, titled «Bring Me the Future» and directed by Andrea Cusumano, unfolds across five pillars: exhibitions, artist residencies, performing arts, education and participation, and symposia and conferences. This widespread calendar spans the entirety of 2026, featuring over 22 exhibitions, 16 residencies, 10 educational and participatory projects, and numerous live events.
Works and events are distributed throughout the city's iconic sites:
The year was inaugurated on January 15, 2026, the anniversary of the earthquake, with an official ceremony at the Town Hall's Agorà Hall in the presence of Minister Alessandro Giuli and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the South (FIDES), which became the city's resident orchestra for all of 2026. On January 16, Piazza XV Gennaio 1968 hosted a free concert by Max Gazzè & Calabria Orchestra as part of the Musicae Loci project, followed by the «City of Thebes» fireworks display.
The program weaves together international stars and historical masters, featuring tributes to figures like Letizia Battaglia, Nanda Vigo, Renata Boero, and Isabella Ducrot, video installations by the duo MASBEDO and Adrian Paci, and the 45th edition of the Orestiadi Festival in the summer. Visiting Gibellina in 2026 means experiencing a collective experiment in urban and cultural regeneration, where contemporary art engages with the memory and future of an entire territory.
Throughout 2026, Gibellina serves as the first Italian Capital of Contemporary Art with the «Bring Me the Future» project, structured into five pillars: exhibitions, residencies, performing arts, education and participation, and symposia and conferences. The widespread calendar includes over 22 exhibitions, 16 artist residencies, and 10 participatory projects, distributed between the MAC, the Orestiadi Foundation, the Consagra Theatre, and Burri's Grande Cretto.
The year opened on January 15 and 16 with the official inauguration and continues until December with a succession of international exhibitions, performances, and meetings, culminating in the 45th edition of the Orestiadi Festival in the summer.
The complete and updated calendar is published on the official website gibellina2026.it.
