The grand opera and music season of Trapani at the Teatro Giuseppe Di Stefano
The Luglio Musicale Trapanese is the premier musical event in the Municipality of Trapani and one of the most historic operatic institutions in Sicily and the entire Mezzogiorno. Founded in 1948, the Ente Luglio Musicale Trapanese is recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a Teatro di Tradizione, a title reserved for major provincial opera houses capable of producing professional-quality work. For over seventy years, the festival has brought great Italian and European repertoire to Trapani, helping to establish the city as a cultural landmark for the province and all of Western Sicily.
The festival's hub is the Teatro Giuseppe Di Stefano, an open-air theater nestled in the greenery of Villa Margherita, named after the famous tenor from Catania. Here, on summer evenings, grand operas are performed under the stars. The season also extends to other iconic locations in Trapani's historic center: the Chiostro di San Domenico hosts open-air summer concerts, the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo welcomes sacred music performances, while the main hall of the Complesso San Domenico and the Teatro Mยฐ Tonino Pardo host chamber music and contemporary opera during the autumn and winter seasons.
The programming of the Luglio Musicale Trapanese goes beyond opera: each season offers around twenty events that blend opera, symphonic and chamber concerts, dance, and special events, with forays into singer-songwriter music and popular repertoire. The festival also includes the Giuseppe Di Stefano International Opera Competition, an important showcase for young voices from around the world, whose finals take place every spring and often select performers for the season's productions.
Deeply tied to the city's identity, the Luglio Musicale Trapanese is one of the main highlights of the Sicilian cultural summer, successfully combining the prestige of the great operatic repertoire with the charm of the historic sites of Trapani, in Sicily. For the local public, it is a long-awaited ritual, while for visitors, it is an opportunity to experience opera in a unique setting, surrounded by the sea, salt pans, and the city's baroque architecture.
The 2026 season of the Luglio Musicale Trapanese, dedicated to the theme "Verbi d'Amore" (Verbs of Love), explores love in its many forms โ hospitality, inclusion, and sharing โ through twenty-one events spread from March to December in the most evocative locations of Trapani.
The season opens on March 29 with Mozart's Requiem K. 626 at the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo. This is followed by summer concerts in the Chiostro di San Domenico (including "American Dream", the tribute to Bowie, Cohen, Michael, and Prince, the "Quintetto sospeso", and the vocal quartet Faraualla), the dance performance "Romeo รจ Giulietta" (September 12), and a series of contemporary chamber operas at the Teatro Mยฐ Tonino Pardo. The season concludes with the Christmas Concert (December 20) and the New Year's Concert (December 30).
From May 13 to 16, the XXI Giuseppe Di Stefano International Opera Competition returns, this year dedicated to selecting voices for I Capuleti e i Montecchi.
Trapani is accessible by car via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway. Trapani-Birgi Airport (Vincenzo Florio) is about 15 km from the center, while Palermo-Punta Raisi Airport is about an hour and a half away. The Trapani train station connects the city to Palermo and the rest of the Sicilian network. The Teatro Giuseppe Di Stefano is located in Villa Margherita, in the city center.
Tickets for operas, concerts, and dance performances are available at the Ente Luglio Musicale Trapanese box office and online through official channels. Subscription packages are available for the opera season. For updated rates and bookings, please consult the official website.
For open-air evenings at the Teatro Di Stefano and the Chiostro di San Domenico, we recommend arriving early. Trapani offers a wide choice of accommodation in the historic center, ideal for combining musical evenings with visits to the city, the salt pans, and the Egadi Islands.
