The fishermen's festival of Favignana, in the Aegadian Islands

The Madonna del Rosario Festival is one of the most cherished events for the community of Favignana, the largest of the Aegadian Islands in the province of Trapani. Celebrated annually on the first Sunday of October, the festival honors the Madonna del Rosario, venerated in the church of the same name in the Piana district and considered for centuries the patron saint of the island's fishermen. In a land where life has always revolved around the sea, fishing, and the historic tuna fishery, this event represents the moment the entire maritime community gathers around its patron.
The heart of the festivities is the solemn procession of the statue of the Madonna del Rosario, which travels through the streets of Favignana's historic center on Sunday afternoon, accompanied by a marching band. The procession concludes at the harbor, where the most moving ritual takes place: the blessing of the boats. Following an ancient custom, fishermen respond by sounding the sirens of their vessels in honor of the Virgin, a collective salute that blends devotion with their trade. The day closes with traditional fireworks over the harbor waters.
Beyond its religious dimension, the festival offers days of conviviality and entertainment. On the evenings leading up to Sunday, musical performances take place in Piazza Europa, alongside the traditional Fish Festival in Piazza Campèria—a perfect opportunity to taste the catch of the Aegadian Islands prepared according to local recipes. According to tradition, the fishermen themselves go from house to house to collect offerings that fund the entertainment and the fireworks dedicated to their patron.
Organized by the Parish together with the Fishermen's Committee, with the patronage of the Municipality of Favignana and the Aegadian Islands Marine Protected Area, the Madonna del Rosario Festival is much more than a religious observance: it is an expression of Favignana's maritime identity and the deep bond between the island, the sea, and faith. For those visiting the Aegadian Islands in autumn, the festival offers an authentic glimpse into the roots of this western Sicilian community.
The Madonna del Rosario Festival returns to Favignana in the autumn of 2026 to renew the maritime community's ancient devotion to its patron saint. As per tradition, the festivities are expected to center around the first Sunday of October, featuring the solemn procession, the blessing of the boats at the harbor, musical performances in the square, and fireworks. The official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated: it is recommended to check for updates on the channels of the Parish and the Municipality of Favignana.
Favignana can be reached by hydrofoils and ferries operated by Liberty Lines and Siremar from the port of Trapani (about 30-40 minutes by hydrofoil) and, during certain periods, from Marsala. The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi. On the island, it is easy to get around on foot or by bicycle.
The festivities take place around the first Sunday of October in the historic center of Favignana (Piazza Europa, Piazza Campèria, the Mother Church, and the harbor area).
Access to the celebrations, the procession, and the performances in the square is free.
