The summer sailing calendar of Mazara del Vallo, from the San Vito Sails to the historic Varchiata
For decades, sailing has been part of the identity of Mazara del Vallo, a quintessential maritime city in the province of Trapani, overlooking the Strait of Sicily and famous for having one of the most important fishing ports in Italy. Every summer, the stretch of water in front of the Lungomare Giuseppe Mazzini becomes the stage for a busy calendar of regattas organized by ASD ADINA, the Mazara Nautical Boating Association, which has been enlivening the city's sailing season from its base at Molo Buonvento.
The program is not a single event but a full season, marked by four regattas spread throughout the summer. It kicks off in June with the San Vito Sails and the 72 Miglia, continues in September with the Varchiataโthe regatta closest to the hearts of the localsโand concludes with the long and demanding 129 Miglia, a two-day offshore race. All competitions take place between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, with sea and land assistance coordinated by the Port Authority.
Among the four races, the Varchiata holds a special place: it is a historic event for local sailing, reaching its thirtieth edition in 2026. This milestone reflects a rare continuity in the Sicilian sporting landscape and testifies to the deep bond between the Mazara community and the sea.
The ADINA regattas are more than just a competition between crews: the Lungomare Mazzini offers a prime vantage point to follow the boats in action, with the 'City of the Satyr' and its Kasbah providing a stunning backdrop. It is a chance to discover the most authentic side of Mazara del Vallo, a place that lives by the sea and its maritime traditions, in a corner of Sicily suspended between Europe and the Mediterranean.
The 2026 edition of the sailing regattas organized by ASD ADINA in Mazara del Vallo consists of four events, officially authorized by the Port Authority, all held in the waters off Lungomare Mazzini between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
The full calendar includes the San Vito Sails, the 72 Miglia, the Varchiata (celebrating its 30th edition), and the two-day offshore race 129 Miglia. A full summer dedicated to sailing in the Strait of Sicily.
All competitions are supported by sea and land assistance, rescue vessels, and medical stations, coordinated by the Mazara del Vallo Port Authority.
The Varchiata, now in its 30th edition, is the most anticipated moment of the calendar: a historic event for local sailing. The 129 Miglia at the end of September is the most challenging test, an offshore race spread over two days.
Mazara del Vallo can be reached by car via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway (Mazara del Vallo exit). The train station is connected to the Trapani-Castelvetrano line. The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi, approximately 50 km away.
The competitions take place in the stretch of water in front of the Lungomare Giuseppe Mazzini: the promenade itself is the ideal, free-access viewing point.
All regattas are held between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Bring a hat, sunglasses, and water: the Mazara summer is hot and the promenade is exposed. Take the opportunity to visit the historic center, the Kasbah, and the Dancing Satyr Museum.
