Lunch with potato tortei on the shores of Lake Smeraldo
The Tortel Festival is one of the most beloved gastronomic events of the summer in Val di Non. It takes place in Fondo, a village in the municipality of Borgo d'Anaunia, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), on the picturesque shores of Lake Smeraldo. Organized by Pro Loco Fondo APS, the event has become a staple of the summer calendar, drawing families, hikers, and visitors eager to taste the authentic flavors of the Trentino mountains.
The stars of the festival are the tortei di patate, the quintessential traditional dish of the Non Valley. These are grated potato fritters, fried in hot oil until golden and crispy, traditionally served with cold cuts, alpine cheeses, and sauerkraut. It is a simple, rustic dish rooted in the valley's farming culture, prepared and served here according to the time-honored recipe.
Starting at 12:00 PM, the Pro Loco hosts an open-air lunch with no booking required and free admission. The atmosphere is that of a classic village fair: shared tables, the aroma of freshly fried tortei, and accordion music providing the soundtrack. The setting of Lake Smeraldo, a mirror of water nestled between rocks and meadows just outside Fondo, makes the experience even more unique.
Lake Smeraldo owes its name to the intense color of its waters and is easily reached from Fondo, even on foot via the scenic "canyon walk," a path on boardwalks that crosses the gorge carved by the stream. The area is perfect for combining the festival with a day outdoors, exploring walks, canyons, and the frescoed villages of Val di Non.
The Tortel Festival is part of a rich summer calendar curated by Pro Loco Fondo, which includes evenings such as Pizza in the Square, the Lantern Festival, and the Cosina Nonesa in the historic center. A collection of events that celebrate the gastronomic tradition and community life of Borgo d'Anaunia and Val di Non.
