The patronal feast of St. Michael in the heart of Appiano on the Wine Road
The St. Michael's Festival, known in German as Michaelsfest or Michaeler Kirchtig, is the patronal feast of the village of San Michele/St. Michael, the main town of the municipality of Appiano sulla strada del vino/Eppan an der Weinstraße, in the province of Bolzano, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every year, towards the end of September, the village Festplatz comes alive to celebrate St. Michael the Archangel, whose liturgical feast day falls on September 29th and gives the village its name.
The festival is rooted in the Kirchtag tradition, the day of the church's dedication, which has always been one of the most cherished community gatherings of the year in the villages of South Tyrol and the historical Tyrol. In the South Tyrolean dialect, this festival marks the transition from summer to autumn, when the valleys celebrate the end of the grazing season and the return to village life. In San Michele, this event preserves its authentic popular and communal character.
The musical heart of the festival is the Bürgerkapelle St. Michael (San Michele Civic Band), one of the most deeply rooted cultural institutions in the Oltradige area. Every year, the band invites residents and visitors to spend this festive day together, accompanying the occasion with traditional marches, concert pieces, and the unmistakable atmosphere of Tyrolean band festivals.
The celebration takes place over a single day, typically from morning until late afternoon, in a friendly and family-oriented atmosphere. There is no shortage of local food and wine, featuring South Tyrolean specialties and wines from the Oltradige, a star attraction in one of the most renowned wine-growing areas of South Tyrol.
Appiano sulla strada del vino is one of the most well-known wine-growing municipalities in South Tyrol, nestled among the vineyards of the Oltradige, just a few kilometers from Bolzano and Lake Caldaro. The St. Michael's Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover the hospitality of this bilingual territory, where Tyrolean band culture and culinary traditions have coexisted for generations. An authentic event that tells the story of an Alpine community far from the major tourist circuits.
The St. Michael's Festival/Michaelsfest 2026 will take place on Sunday, September 27, 2026, from 10:00 AM until late afternoon, at the Festplatz of San Michele/St. Michael, the main town of Appiano sulla strada del vino, in the province of Bolzano.
As per tradition, the San Michele Civic Band (Bürgerkapelle St. Michael) cordially invites the community to spend this patronal feast day together, in the spirit of the South Tyrolean Kirchtag, featuring live music, gastronomy, and conviviality.
The detailed program of the event will be released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
