The Romanesque art festival at Castel Tirolo, along the Alpine Romanesque Route
Every autumn, the municipality of Tirolo, a charming village perched above Merano in the province of Bolzano, becomes a key stop for the Tage der Romanik (Romanesque Days). The event is promoted along the Alpine Straße der Romanik (Alpine Romanesque Route), a cultural itinerary that brings together over thirty Romanesque monuments across the Vinschgau Valley, the rest of South Tyrol, the nearby Carolingian monastery of Müstair in Switzerland, and parts of Trentino.
The heart of the initiative in this corner of the Burgraviato is Castel Tirolo (Schloss Tirol), the castle that gave the entire region its name and now houses the South Tyrolean Museum of History and Culture. The castle preserves its most precious treasures in its Romanesque art: the extraordinary 12th-century marble portals, finely sculpted, are among the most famous examples of Romanesque sculpture in the Alps and are the main reason the castle is a highlight of the event.
The Tage der Romanik were created to provide coordinated access to a heritage that is otherwise scattered across the territory: churches, chapels, castles, and monasteries that are usually less accessible open their doors during the same weekend, often with guided tours led by experts. It is the perfect opportunity for an itinerary between the Vinschgau Valley and the Burgraviato, with Castel Tirolo serving as a scenic starting point overlooking the Merano basin.
The event is part of the Stiegen zum Himmel ("Stairs to Heaven") project, which promotes the medieval heritage of the South Tyrolean region. At Castel Tirolo, participation is designed to be accessible to everyone: the guided tours dedicated to the castle's Romanesque art are free and do not require reservations, offering a simple way for families, enthusiasts, and tourists to connect with the ancient history of Tyrol.
The 2026 Tage der Romanik at Castel Tirolo (Tirolo, Province of Bolzano) will take place on Saturday, October 10th, and Sunday, October 11th, 2026, dates confirmed by the official calendar of the Castel Tirolo Museum of History and Culture and the "Stiegen zum Himmel" initiative portal. As per tradition, the castle joins the event along the Alpine Straße der Romanik, highlighting its famous 12th-century marble portals, which are among the masterpieces of Alpine Romanesque sculpture.
The detailed schedule for the 2026 edition—including guided tour times, languages, and participation details—has not yet been published at the time of writing. It will be announced by the museum closer to the event on the official website www.schlosstirol.it.
