The blonde Haflinger horses take to the track at the Merano-Maia Racecourse
The Haflinger Races - Maia Oktoberfest are one of the most iconic events of the autumn season at the Merano-Maia Racecourse, located in the Maia Bassa district of Merano, in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. The absolute stars are the Haflinger horses, the breed with the blonde coat and light mane native to the Avelengo plateau above Merano, racing here on home turf to the applause of the crowd.
The Merano Racecourse is internationally renowned for its thoroughbred steeplechase races, but it also preserves the territory's deep bond with the Haflinger, a working and mountain horse that has become a symbol of South Tyrol. Throughout the year, the venue hosts various days dedicated to the Haflinger, including the famous Easter Monday races and autumn events linked to the grape harvest. The October edition dresses tradition in the cheerful tones of Oktoberfest, the great Central European beer festival that pairs perfectly with the convivial South Tyrolean spirit.
The day alternates rustic Haflinger races on the track with entertainment designed for the whole family:
The event attracts both horse racing enthusiasts and families and tourists staying in the Merano area during autumn, the season of the grape harvest and the Törggelen. The setting of the Maia Racecourse, nestled among the vineyards and mountains of the Burgraviato, makes the day an opportunity to discover a living equestrian tradition and an authentic aspect of the culture of Merano and South Tyrol.
