Early music in the historic venues of Lana, South Tyrol
The LanAntiqua – Lana Music Festival is the premier early music event in Lana, one of the most vibrant towns in the Burgraviato district, in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol. The festival was created to restore early music to a prominent place in the town's cultural life, offering a journey that spans from the Middle Ages to the Romantic period.
The event is promoted by the LanAntiqua association, founded in 2021, which enriches Lana's musical scene through concert series such as «LanAntiqua – Alte Musik» and local organ recitals. The artistic direction is entrusted to Josef Höhn, a baroque violinist and organist who has served as the parish organist of Lana for many years. That same year, Höhn also founded the Capella Lanensis ensemble, which brings together musicians from South Tyrol and the neighboring German and Italian-speaking regions, focusing on the early and high Baroque repertoire played on original instruments or faithful replicas.
The guiding principle of the festival is original sound: works are presented in a sonic setting consistent with the era of composition, using historical instruments and the knowledge gained from historically informed performance practice. The concerts feature internationally acclaimed artists alongside local musicians and emerging young talents.
The main venue for the concerts is the Maria Himmelfahrt parish church in Niederlana, known for its monumental late-Gothic altar created by Hans Schnatterpeck and for its acoustics, which are particularly well-suited to sacred and Baroque music. The festival also involves other historic sites in the town of Lana, maintaining a close bond between architectural heritage and musical repertoire.
The festival unfolds throughout the year with a series of events that primarily accompany the summer, autumn, and Advent seasons, offering the public in South Tyrol and visitors an opportunity to experience early music in its ideal context.
