The traditional dessert of Giuliana returns to the village streets for a festive celebration

In the charming village of Giuliana, perched at an altitude of over 700 meters in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, the end of the year coincides with the return of an ancient and identity-defining dessert. The Sweet Sfincione Festival, the heart of the "Giuliana in Festa" event, celebrates a specialty that in Giuliana is not savory as it is elsewhere on the island, but strictly sweet: a fluffy, oven-baked pastry with a soft filling of sheep's milk ricotta, topped with chocolate chips and a dusting of cinnamon.
The origins of the Giuliana sweet sfincione date back to the early 20th century. According to the memories of the village elders, the recipe was created by a nun from the Opera Pia Buttafuoco Tomasini, who prepared it to brighten the festivities for the institute's guests. Traditionally, it was accompanied by cooked wine flavored with quinces and spices. After about thirty years of oblivion, in 2022 the community decided to bring this preparation back to life, creating a festival that has become its official celebration.
The event brings the historic center of Giuliana to life, in front of the Mother Church and around the Frederick II Castle, a medieval fortress that dominates the town from above. In past editions, the program has offered:
More than just a simple food festival, "Giuliana in Festa" is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the province of Palermo, far from the most beaten tourist paths. Amidst stone alleys, views of the Sicani Mountains, and the imposing silhouette of the Swabian castle, the event combines the rediscovery of an almost lost confectionery tradition with the promotion of the food and wine excellence of the municipality of Giuliana.
The 2026 edition of the Sweet Sfincione Festival has not yet been confirmed with official dates. Historically, the event takes place in late December in the historic center of Giuliana, in front of the Mother Church and around the Frederick II Castle, with tastings of the sweet sfincione, typical local products, and performances. The detailed program will be published by the Municipality of Giuliana closer to the event.
