About Sweet Sfincione Festival

Every late December, the village of Giuliana, nestled in the mountains of the Palermo hinterland, celebrates its most iconic dessert with the Sweet Sfincione Festival, the heart of the "Giuliana in Festa" event. A fluffy baked pastry filled with sheep's milk ricotta cream, chocolate chips, and cinnamon serves as the perfect excuse for two days of tastings, local craft markets, musical performances, and guided tours of the majestic Frederick II Castle that overlooks the town.

The sweet sfincione, the soul of Giuliana

In the charming village of Giuliana, perched at an altitude of over 700 meters in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, the end of the year coincides with the return of an ancient and identity-defining dessert. The Sweet Sfincione Festival, the heart of the "Giuliana in Festa" event, celebrates a specialty that in Giuliana is not savory as it is elsewhere on the island, but strictly sweet: a fluffy, oven-baked pastry with a soft filling of sheep's milk ricotta, topped with chocolate chips and a dusting of cinnamon.

A recipe rediscovered after thirty years

The origins of the Giuliana sweet sfincione date back to the early 20th century. According to the memories of the village elders, the recipe was created by a nun from the Opera Pia Buttafuoco Tomasini, who prepared it to brighten the festivities for the institute's guests. Traditionally, it was accompanied by cooked wine flavored with quinces and spices. After about thirty years of oblivion, in 2022 the community decided to bring this preparation back to life, creating a festival that has become its official celebration.

Two days of festivities in the village

The event brings the historic center of Giuliana to life, in front of the Mother Church and around the Frederick II Castle, a medieval fortress that dominates the town from above. In past editions, the program has offered:

  • tastings of the sweet sfincione and typical local products;
  • the Giarraffa olive, a local gastronomic presidium awarded the De.Co (Municipal Denomination), also offered in pรขtรฉ form;
  • organic lentil soups and the Giuliana tabisca, a flatbread with anchovies and cheese;
  • local porchetta and a market exhibition of artisanal products;
  • musical performances, concerts, activities for children, and guided tours of the Castle.

A journey into the flavors of the Sicilian hinterland

More than just a simple food festival, "Giuliana in Festa" is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the province of Palermo, far from the most beaten tourist paths. Amidst stone alleys, views of the Sicani Mountains, and the imposing silhouette of the Swabian castle, the event combines the rediscovery of an almost lost confectionery tradition with the promotion of the food and wine excellence of the municipality of Giuliana.
