In Lercara Friddi, a town of about seven thousand inhabitants in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, located in the Sicilian hinterland about sixty kilometers from the capital, there is a pastry that has become a true collective identity: the pantofola. Rounded and soft, covered in a white glaze made from egg whites, sugar, and lemon juice (or simply dusted with icing sugar), it hides a generous filling of crushed almonds, chocolate chips, candied fruit, honey, and typical Sicilian aromas like orange zest. The Pantofola Festival is the event that celebrates this delight in the town's historic center every December.
The recipe for the pantofola has been handed down for generations within Lercara families, guarded and perfected from mother to daughter. Lercara Friddi has always been recognized for its confectionery production, and the pantofola has crossed the borders of the district to win over illustrious admirers: it is said that figures such as General Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa and the writer Leonardo Sciascia would stop in Lercara specifically to taste it. The official slogan of the festival, "You don't wear it, you eat it", plays ironically on the name of the pastry and has become its trademark.
The event takes place in conjunction with the Christmas markets and transforms the streets and squares of the village into a journey of flavors and festive atmospheres. Highlights include:
Set in the hilly landscape of the province of Palermo, Lercara Friddi preserves a historic center that provides the ideal backdrop for the festival: during the celebration, scents, flavors, and colors attract residents and visitors from across the central-western Sicily region. The festival is organized by the Pro Loco Lercara Friddi in collaboration with the Municipality, with the aim of promoting local specialties and keeping a centuries-old confectionery tradition alive.
The Pantofola Festival returns to Lercara Friddi in 2026, faithful to its appointment with the Christmas season. As every year, the festival, organized by the Pro Loco together with the Municipality, celebrates the village's typical pastry — the pantofola, made with almonds, chocolate, and candied fruit — through tastings, Christmas markets, show cooking, and performances in the historic center.
The exact dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: for updates, it is advisable to follow the channels of the Pro Loco Lercara Friddi.
