About Castronovo Living Nativity

Every year, between late December and Epiphany, the village of Castronovo di Sicilia, in the province of Palermo, transforms into a small Bethlehem. The Living Nativity brings the cobbled alleys of the ancient Arab quarter of Batia to life with around one hundred actors in period costumes, over twenty stations depicting ancient crafts, torches, fountains, and the music of bagpipers. A theatrical and evocative journey curated by the Ali dei Sicani Association, involving the entire local community.

A Bethlehem among the stones of Batia

The Castronovo di Sicilia Living Nativity is one of the most evocative Christmas representations in the hinterland of the province of Palermo. Every year, during the holidays, the Municipality of Castronovo di Sicilia reenacts the Holy Nativity, transforming the ancient Arab quarter of Batia into a small Bethlehem from two thousand years ago. The cobbled streets, clustered houses, fountains, and stone troughs provide a natural backdrop for a route that winds through the heart of the historic center.

One hundred actors and ancient crafts

The event involves around one hundred actors from the local community, who wear historical costumes and bring to life over twenty themed stations dedicated to traditional peasant crafts: woodworking, the preparation of cheese and ricotta, artisanal workshops, and the agricultural activities of the past. The streets are illuminated exclusively by torches, without modern lighting, while the air fills with the sound of bagpipers, recreating the authentic atmosphere of Christmas from long ago.

Traditional flavors

Along the route, visitors can taste typical dishes of the Sicilian peasant cuisine, prepared by local families: pitirri, chickpea and lentil soups, cheeses, and fresh ricotta. The nativity scene thus becomes not only a religious reenactment but also a journey into the flavors and traditions of the Sicani Mountains hinterland.

A community event

Organized by the Ali dei Sicani Association, chaired by Salvatore Lo Cicero, and supported by the municipal administration, the Castronovo di Sicilia Living Nativity has grown edition after edition to become a highly anticipated appointment in the Christmas calendar of Sicily. The strong participation of the inhabitants and the scenic attention to detail make it a successful example of enhancing the historical heritage and popular traditions of a small village in the Sicani Mountains.

When it takes place

The nativity scene is usually held between the last days of December and early January, coinciding with the Christmas holidays and Epiphany, during the evening hours. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the organizers.
