About Living Nativity Montallegro

Every winter, the Living Nativity transforms the historic center of Montallegro, in the province of Agrigento, into a bustling Nativity village. Over a hundred costumed performers bring artisan workshops, ancient trades, and the Holy Family to life, while the route winds through a Christmas market, a museum of rural life, and numerous tastings of Sicilian gastronomic specialties. An event that draws thousands of visitors between December and January.

A nativity scene that is an entire village

During the Christmas season, the historic center of Montallegro โ€” a small town in the province of Agrigento, Sicily โ€” transforms into an evocative open-air nativity scene. The Living Nativity of Montallegro is not a simple static display: it is an authentic "village within a village," where over a hundred performers of all ages reconstruct the Palestine of Jesus' time with its houses, workshops, and trades.

Walking along the path, visitors encounter the shoemaker, the greengrocer, the carpenter, the baker, the fisherman, the shepherd, the blacksmith, and the innkeeper, each busy with their work as it was done in the past. The entire experience is accompanied by sacred scenes: the Holy Family, the shepherds, and the Three Wise Men who come to adore the Messiah, in a re-enactment often performed in the Sicilian dialect.

Between faith, tradition, and gastronomy

Organized by the San Leonardo Parish with the patronage of the Municipality of Montallegro, the event is rooted in a tradition spanning over a decade that has grown with each edition, reaching nearly eight thousand visitors. The heart of the event is Piazza Giovanni Paolo II and the narrow streets of the ancient village.

One of the most beloved features is the abundance of food and wine: along the route, you can taste warm ricotta, legume soup, focaccia, wine, and numerous other specialties of the Sicilian rural tradition, served in the village workshops.

The museum and the market

The visit is enriched by several thematic areas:

  • The Christmas Market, with stalls full of handcrafted products and gift ideas;
  • The Museum of Rural Life, which houses ancient tools, domestic settings, and a precious hand-painted Sicilian cart;
  • The exhibition of handcrafted nativity scenes, featuring works created by the town's residents.

Thanks to a focus on accessibility, the route is also wheelchair-friendly, making this living nativity an event open to the whole family and the entire Agrigento region.

Living Nativity Montallegro โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition (the 19th) of the Living Nativity of Montallegro is expected, as per tradition, during the Christmas holidays, between late December 2026 and Epiphany in January 2027. Official dates and the detailed program have not yet been announced by the San Leonardo Parish: they are usually communicated in the weeks leading up to Christmas on the event's official social media channels.

The Living Nativity of Montallegro returns for the 2026 Christmas season, confirming an event that has been animating this village in the province of Agrigento for years. At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: based on custom, the event takes place between late December and early January, with evening performances in the historic center.

As in previous editions, visitors can expect the usual route through the workshops of ancient trades, scenes of the Nativity performed in the Sicilian dialect, a Christmas market, the museum of rural life, and tastings of local gastronomic specialties. The final program will be published on official channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
