The Canalello district transforms into a little Bethlehem, featuring artisan workshops and the ancient 'Lu vïaggiu dulurusu' novena

The Cianciana Living Nativity is one of the most evocative Christmas re-enactments in the Agrigento hinterland. In the town of Cianciana, in the Province of Agrigento, the picturesque Canalello district transforms during the holidays into a small Bethlehem: alleys, stairways, and ancient houses serve as a natural backdrop for a widespread nativity scene that involves the entire community.
Along the path, the village homes open their doors to host artisan workshops that reconstruct the daily life of late 19th-century Sicily. Visitors encounter the blacksmith, the shoemaker, the tailor, and the carpenter at work, alongside housewives busy with domestic chores. The protagonists of the representation are often the town's elders, who relive and pass down the arts and crafts that defined their lives, giving the nativity a sense of identity and collective memory.
The most heartfelt moment is the recitation of 'Lu vïaggiu dulurusu', considered the oldest Sicilian Christmas novena: composed around 1750 by the Monreale priest Antonino Diliberto, it narrates the journey of Joseph and Mary in search of shelter for the birth of Jesus. Its recitation, in the Sicilian dialect, accompanies the evenings of the nativity and gives the event a profound spiritual and popular dimension.
The event is further enriched by concerts inside the Mother Church, performances by the marching band, and the traditional zampognaro (bagpiper) wandering through the historic center. The nativity setup and the Nativity grotto become the focal point of an immersive experience that attracts visitors from all over Sicily.
Organized by the Cianciana Experience Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Cianciana, the Living Nativity is much more than a re-enactment: it is an occasion where the entire town comes together, across different generations, to share the authentic spirit of Christmas. Admission is free, and the visit winds freely through the alleys of the Canalello district, in the heart of the Agrigento region.
The 2026-2027 edition of the Cianciana Living Nativity does not yet have official dates. Following the custom of previous years, the event will be held between December 2026 and the Epiphany of 2027 in the Canalello district, featuring traditional ancient trade workshops and the recitation of the 'Lu vïaggiu dulurusu' novena. The detailed program will be announced by the Cianciana Experience Association and the Municipality of Cianciana.
Cianciana is located in the Agrigento hinterland, in the Province of Agrigento. By car, it can be reached via the SS189 and the provincial roads connecting the Sicani area; the nearest cities are Agrigento and Sciacca. The reference train station is in Agrigento, from where you can continue by bus or car.
Representations usually take place in the evening, starting around 7:30 PM. Admission to the living nativity is free. Comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for the sloping alleys of the Canalello district are recommended.
