The Nativity comes to life in the medieval alleys of the Sicani Mountains

The Giuliana Living Nativity is one of the most beloved Christmas events in the province of Palermo. Every year during the holidays, the small village of Giuliana—perched at over 700 meters above sea level in the Sicani Mountains, on the border between the Palermo and Agrigento areas—transforms into a grand representation of the Nativity. The alleys of the historic center, the terraces, and the ancient districts become the stage for a theatrical journey that attracts thousands of visitors each year.
The event involves over 150 performers, including actors, extras, and local artisans, who animate scenes of daily life rooted in Sicilian farming and craft traditions. Along the route, visitors encounter ancient trades that have all but disappeared: the basket maker, the carpenter, the blacksmith, the baker, and the weaver, meticulously reconstructed within the village's workshops and courtyards. The performances culminate in the Nativity scene, immersed in the timeless atmosphere of the medieval historic center.
The symbolic heart of the event is the Castello di Federico II, a Swabian-era fortress that dominates the town from its summit and offers panoramic views over the Sosio River valley. The manor, with its pentagonal tower, is a rare example among Sicily's Swabian castles and provides the re-enactment with a setting of rare beauty, characterized by stone walls, narrow alleys, and medieval vistas.
The route is more than just theater: along the way, spaces are set up for tastings of typical local products alongside a market exhibition dedicated to local crafts and flavors, from extra virgin olive oil to traditional Giuliana sweets. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the food and wine of the Sicani Mountains in an authentic, communal setting animated by the entire village.
Organized by the Pro Loco "Città di Giuliana" with the support of the Municipality of Giuliana and the involvement of numerous local families, the Living Nativity has become a defining identity event for the village over the years. More than just a simple performance, it is a way to preserve and pass down the collective memory, arts, and flavors of a lesser-known corner of inland Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Giuliana Living Nativity does not yet have official dates. Based on tradition, the performance is expected to return to animate the alleys of the historic center and the Castello di Federico II during the Christmas period, between late December and Epiphany. We invite you to check for updates on the dedicated Facebook page and the Pro Loco channels before planning your visit.
Giuliana is located in inland Sicily, in the Sicani Mountains, about 90 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A19 motorway or the SS624 Palermo-Sciacca road, continuing along provincial roads towards the interior. The nearest airports are Palermo (Punta Raisi) and Trapani-Birgi.
The historic center is largely pedestrianized during the event: it is recommended to leave your car in the parking areas at the entrance to the village and continue on foot along the nativity route.
The event takes place in winter at a high altitude: warm clothing and comfortable footwear are recommended for the steep, stone-paved alleys. The performances are held in the afternoon and evening.
