A journey back to 1223 within the walls of the Castello Beccadelli in Marineo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of inland Sicily, just a few kilometers from Palermo, the town of Marineo hosts one of the most beloved Christmas re-enactments in the province: the Medieval Living Nativity at Castello Beccadelli. Every winter, within the walls of the 16th-century fortress commissioned by Francesco Beccadelli Bologna, time seems to slip back to 1223: alleys, workshops, and courtyards are filled with performers in period costumes, bringing the daily life of a medieval village back to life.
The route winds through 23 scenes brought to life by approximately 150 performers. It is a grand historical re-enactment of the trades and rural civilization from the Middle Ages to the present day: blacksmiths and carpenters working in their shops, farmers and herders, housewives busy with domestic chores, ancient agricultural tools, and numerous animals. At the end of the path, visitors reach the depiction of the Nativity, the symbolic heart of the entire representation.
Marineo is known as the City of Nativity Scenes: in addition to the living version, during the holidays, you can admire numerous static and mechanical nativity scenes set up by various local groups, both in the Castello Beccadelli and in various exhibitions organized for the occasion. The event is curated by the GMG Marineo Association and the Confraternity of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, in collaboration with the local community and with the support of the Municipality of Marineo.
Along the nativity route, stands are set up to sample typical local products: among the most requested specialties is pasta seasoned with wild boar ragù. The tasting is an integral part of the visit and contributes to the convivial atmosphere that characterizes this event, which attracts visitors from all over Western Sicily every year.
Included among the Christmas events of the Province of Palermo, the Marineo Medieval Living Nativity combines devotion, history, and folklore in a unique scenic setting. For those visiting Sicily during the holidays, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic inland village and a nativity tradition deeply rooted in the local community.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of the Medieval Living Nativity at Castello Beccadelli have not yet been announced. In previous years, the re-enactment was held during the Christmas season, with performances between late December and early January, in the usual setting of the Castello Beccadelli Bologna in Marineo. The detailed program and times will be published by the organizers closer to the holidays.
