A day dedicated to PGI South Tyrol Speck in the heart of the Vinschgau Valley
Every spring, the village of Naturno (Naturns) in the Vinschgau Valley (Val Venosta) dedicates an entire day to the most iconic product of South Tyrolean culinary culture: PGI South Tyrol Speck. The South Tyrol Speck Day (known in German as Südtiroler Specktag) brings Town Hall Square (Rathausplatz) to life with a gourmet market, tastings, live music, and a program designed for the whole family. The event is organized by the Naturno Tourist Board in collaboration with the PGI South Tyrol Speck Consortium and local associations, and admission is free.
The heart of the event is the gourmet market (Genussmarkt), where numerous stalls offer South Tyrolean cheeses, artisanal breads, PGI apples from the Vinschgau Valley, DOC wines, and, of course, innovative dishes prepared with PGI South Tyrol Speck. Producers share the traditional processing methods and quality standards that define this smoked and cured ham, a true staple of the South Tyrolean table.
A highlight of the day is the guided tasting session with the Taste Ambassador, reserved for adults. These sessions offer carefully curated pairings: in the morning, speck is paired with PGI South Tyrol apples, while in the afternoon, it is showcased alongside South Tyrolean DOC wines. Participation is by reservation through the Naturno Tourist Office.
The day is accompanied by live music: the Naturno Brass Band performs in the morning, while afternoon acts range from folk music and schlager to rock, appealing to audiences of all ages. A dedicated area with entertainment activities for children makes this event a perfect outing for the whole family.
The Speck Day often serves as the grand finale of a broader fringe program that, in the preceding days, offers scenic gourmet walks, guided orchard tours with tastings, and e-bike tours through the Vinschgau landscape. It is a wonderful opportunity to discover not just the speck, but the entire rural tradition and territory of the Municipality of Naturno, in the province of Bolzano, in the Trentino-South Tyrol region.
The fifth edition of the South Tyrol Speck Day took place on Sunday, May 10, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, in the Town Hall Square in Naturno. The day opened with the sounds of the Naturno Brass Band, followed by performances from the groups Karussell and Rifflblech, featuring a repertoire ranging from folk music to rock.
The gourmet market offered cheeses, DOC wines, Vinschgau Valley apples, and specialties based on PGI South Tyrol Speck. Two sessions of guided tasting with the Taste Ambassador (reserved for adults aged 15 and over, at a cost of 10 euros per session, by reservation) featured speck and PGI apple pairings in the morning, and speck with DOC wines in the afternoon. A dedicated space for children completed the family-friendly program.
Naturno is located in the Vinschgau Valley, about 15 km from Merano. By car: take the A22 motorway to the Bolzano Sud exit, then follow the MeBo expressway towards Merano and the SS38 towards Vinschgau. By train: the Merano-Malles line stops at Naturno station, just a few minutes' walk from the town center.
Access to the event and the gourmet market is free. Guided tastings with the Taste Ambassador require a fee and must be booked in advance at the Naturno Tourist Office or on the naturns.it website.
The event typically takes place on the first Sunday of May, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, in Town Hall Square (Rathausplatz).
