The Herbstkonzert mit Törggelen der Musikkapelle Tschars is the annual event where the Tschars brass band welcomes the autumn season in the village square. The festival takes place in Tschars, a village in the municipality of Kastelbell-Tschars, located in the Vinschgau valley in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige. Traditionally held on a Sunday after Holy Mass, the concert blends two local pillars: traditional South Tyrolean brass music and the Törggelen season.

Brass music and tradition

The Musikkapelle Tschars is one of the many brass bands (Musikkapellen) that define the rhythm of life in South Tyrolean villages. Throughout the year, the band performs various concerts—from spring to summer—but the autumn concert, celebrated in the square after the religious service, is the most characteristic way to inaugurate the harvest period. The repertoire ranges from marches and polkas to waltzes and traditional Alpine brass music, all in an accessible, open-air setting.

Törggelen in the Vinschgau valley

Törggelen is an ancient South Tyrolean farming custom linked to the end of the grape harvest and the arrival of autumn. During this period, which in Kastelbell-Tschars generally runs from late September to mid-November, local farms and inns open their doors to serve new wine, roasted chestnuts, hearty soups, dumplings, speck, and sausages with sauerkraut and potatoes. The band's autumn concert fits perfectly into this setting, offering visitors music, fine food, and conviviality in one unique event.
