The Christmas market in the Capuchin garden of Lana
The Sterntaler Weihnachtsmarkt is the Christmas market of Lana, a large village in the Burgraviato district at the foot of Mount San Vigilio, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). Unlike the large city markets, it takes place in a cozy and evocative setting: the Kapuzinergarten, the historic garden of the Capuchin monastery, which during Advent transforms into a small village illuminated by lights and animated by the scent of mulled wine and spiced sweets.
The market brings together about twenty carefully decorated stalls (around 22 in recent editions), run by local farmers, artisans, and creative hobbyists. Among the stands, you can find handmade items in wool, felt, glass, wood, and wax, Christmas decorations, ornaments, and gift ideas, alongside South Tyrolean culinary specialties: baked goods, Advent sweets, cheeses, cured meats, and hot drinks. The market's compact size makes it an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic Christmas atmosphere without the crowds.
The Sterntaler Weihnachtsmarkt devotes plenty of space to children. The program for families includes the sheep farm (Schaffamilie), pony rides, a puppet theater, and the Sterntaler Backstube, the bakery workshop where children can knead and bake their own treats. There are also creative workshops, a glitter station, small carousels, and playful activities. Live music and concerts accompany the days, creating a festive mood throughout the Advent season.
The name of the market is inspired by the Sterntaler ("The Star Money") fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. In this spirit, the event has a strong charitable soul: during the market, you can purchase Sterntaler lottery tickets, with proceeds donated to charitable causes, including support for children suffering from heart disease. There is also a Christmas mailbox from which you can send postcards all over the world.
Located just a few kilometers from Merano, the Municipality of Lana is famous for its apple orchards and a sober, genuine Christmas tradition. The Sterntaler Weihnachtsmarkt is part of the wider South Tyrolean Christmas calendar, which in the Burgraviato district also includes light shows at the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. Visiting the Lana market means discovering a more intimate and familiar side of the South Tyrolean Advent, amidst quality craftsmanship, mountain flavors, and activities for all ages.
