The Advent market nestled within the medieval walls of Tyrol Castle
The Tiroler Schlossadvent (Tyrol Castle Advent) is one of the most evocative Christmas markets in South Tyrol. It takes place inside Tyrol Castle (Schloss Tirol), the ancient manor that towers over the Merano basin and gave its name to the entire Tyrolean region. For two weekends during the Advent season, the castle's inner courtyard and halls come alive with stalls, festive scents, and music, offering visitors an authentic and intimate Christmas experience, far from the crowds of large city markets.
The heart of the event is traditional South Tyrolean craftsmanship. Inside the castle halls, local artisans display their creations and demonstrate ancient techniques live:
The Knights' Hall (Rittersaal) hosts high-quality local South Tyrolean products, ranging from gourmet specialties to decorative items.
Music is a key feature: brass bands and choirs perform Christmas concerts that resonate through the ancient walls. A nativity scene exhibition is set up in the castle chapel, while the entire complex is adorned with the lights and decorations typical of the South Tyrolean Advent.
At the food stalls, you can enjoy traditional South Tyrolean dishes, baked goods, and hot drinks typical of the cold season, all in a picturesque and convivial setting.
The Tiroler Schlossadvent is also designed for the little ones, with workshops, entertainment, and shows for children. Weather permitting, romantic horse-drawn carriage rides are organized from the church square in Tirolo to the castle entrance.
The market is held in the municipality of Tirolo (Dorf Tirol), above Merano, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Organized by the Tirolo Tourist Association, the event combines the thousand-year history of the castle with South Tyrolean Christmas traditions and has become a staple of the Advent season in the Merano area.
The Tyrol Castle Christmas market is confirmed for two weekends: November 27-29 and December 5-8, 2026, open Friday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with free admission.
In the castle courtyard and halls, artisans offer felt work, ceramics, jewelry, wool spinning, and basketry; the Knights' Hall features high-quality local South Tyrolean products. There will be Christmas concerts by choirs and brass bands, a nativity scene exhibition in the chapel, food stalls with South Tyrolean dishes and sweets, and activities for children.
Weather permitting, a horse-drawn carriage service runs from the Tirolo church square to the castle entrance (5 euros per person, free for children under 10).
2026 Edition: November 27-29 and December 5-8, 2026, from Friday to Sunday, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Free admission.
Tyrol Castle is located in Tirolo (Dorf Tirol), above Merano. By car, you can reach Tirolo (paid parking available in the village); from there, the castle is accessible on foot via the Falknerweg, a paved path taking about 30 minutes from the church square, or by horse-drawn carriage.
Weather permitting, a carriage service runs from the church square in Tirolo to about 300 meters from the castle entrance, every half hour from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM: 5 euros per person, free for children under 10.
