A family-friendly Advent market on the Kirchplatz in Lagundo, just a stone's throw from Merano
The Algunder Christkindlmarkt, or Lagundo Christmas Market, takes place in the heart of the village of Lagundo (Algund), in the autonomous province of Bolzano, in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol. Set up on the Kirchplatz (church square), just a few kilometers from Merano, it is one of the most intimate and family-oriented markets in the Merano area: a quiet, traffic-free alternative to the larger city markets.
The Lagundo Christkindlmarkt is designed primarily for children and those seeking a peaceful atmosphere. Among the wooden huts, young visitors will find an ice rink with skate rentals, a giant gingerbread house, and a small petting zoo. Every Friday afternoon is dedicated to the little ones, featuring dancing, storytelling, creative workshops for making decorations, cookies, and Christmas cards, as well as entertainment around the gingerbread house.
The stalls offer South Tyrolean handicrafts and local products: organic cotton garments, perfumes, jams, wines, and traditional specialties. The gastronomic selection is equally rich, featuring mulled wine, Christmas sweets, and local dishes. Every Saturday from 5:00 PM, a live show cooking session takes place: soups, polenta, and canederli (bread dumplings) are prepared fresh on a rustic wood-burning stove, with free tastings. On weekends, the square comes alive with live music and festive melodies in the afternoon.
One of the market's highlights is the free shuttle train connecting Lagundo to Merano during the Advent season: a convenient way to visit both markets without using your car. The service is particularly frequent on weekends and is bolstered by daily runs between Christmas and Epiphany.
The market is held in the center of Lagundo, in a flat and accessible location, with underground parking and an elevator located beneath the church. The event is organized by the Lagundo Tourist Association (Tourismusverein Algund). Admission is free, and the event is a delightful stop within the rich calendar of Christmas markets in the Burgraviato and South Tyrol regions.
The 2026 edition of the Algunder Christkindlmarkt is scheduled from November 27, 2026, to January 3, 2027, on the Kirchplatz in Lagundo. The inauguration is planned for the late afternoon on the opening day.
The market is open during Advent weekends and becomes daily during the last week of the year, up until Epiphany. Handicraft and food stalls are accompanied by family attractions: ice rink, a large gingerbread house, and a small petting zoo.
Free admission. Stall hours: Friday 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM; food stands until 10:00 PM. Special hours on holidays.
