About Marlinger Eiszauber

Every winter, the Marlinger Eiszauber transforms the Festplatz in Marling, located in the Burgraviato district of Bolzano, into a glittering ice oasis. From late November through January, the village square hosts an outdoor ice rink perfect for families, children, and skating enthusiasts, complete with skate rentals, a cozy refreshment area, and a packed calendar of evening events including ice theater, silent discos, ice stock sport, and New Year's Eve celebrations with fireworks.

A winter oasis in the heart of the village

The Marlinger Eiszauber is the winter highlight that brings the Festplatz (festival square) of Marlengo/Marling to life every year between late November and late January. Located in the Burgraviato district overlooking the Merano basin in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of South Tyrol, the square next to the new volunteer fire station becomes an open-air ice rink—a popular gathering spot for families, children, and skaters of all ages during the coldest months of the year.

A young yet beloved tradition

The initiative was born in the summer of 2024 from an idea by Thomas Hölzl, president of the local brass band, and opened its doors for the first time on December 5, 2024. Since its debut, the Marlinger Eiszauber has captured the community's heart: in its very first season, about one hundred season passes were sold. One detail sets this rink apart from others in the area: a small ice path that breaks away from the square's classic layout, inviting visitors to skate through a miniature village street.

More than just skating

Beyond open skating, the Marlinger Eiszauber offers a dense program of side events that make each season unique. Recurring highlights include:

  • Saint Nicholas Festival and Advent events;
  • Shepherds' Fire (Hirtenfeuer) with live music and singing;
  • Silent disco on ice for younger crowds;
  • Ice stock sport tournament (Eisstockschießen);
  • Figure skating shows and performances by the local brass band;
  • New Year's Eve celebrations with fireworks.

A community project

The Marlinger Eiszauber is promoted by the municipal administration of Marling together with the local Tourist Association and supported by six local associations, as well as the local credit union and area businesses. It is a truly community-driven project that reflects the solidarity and social vibrancy typical of South Tyrolean villages. A heated kiosk offers hot drinks and snacks, perfect for a break after a spin on the ice.
