The patronal feast of Ischitella in honor of Saint Eustace the Martyr, every May 20th
The Solemnity of Saint Eustace the Martyr is the heart of the religious and civic identity of Ischitella, a small town in the Gargano area overlooking Lake Varano, in the province of Foggia (Apulia). Every year, on May 20th, the entire town pauses to honor its patron saint in a celebration that blends popular devotion, family tradition, and public festivities. The celebrations date back to 1643, the year Saint Eustace was recognized as the protector of the Ischitella community; in 2023, the festival marked the 380th anniversary of this patronage.
The unique aspect of the devotion in Ischitella is that it does not venerate a single saint, but an entire family of martyrs. Alongside Saint Eustace—a converted Roman soldier and, according to tradition, the protector of hunters—the town honors his wife Saint Theopista and their two children Theopistus and Agapitus, who are also saints. Their statues are carried together in procession, a powerful image of shared faith that makes the Ischitella festival unique across the entire Gargano region.
During the days of the festival, the historic center is transformed: it is a centuries-old tradition for residents to decorate balconies and windows with red drapes, blankets, and fabrics, a color that recalls the saint's martyrdom. The town literally turns red, creating a scenic atmosphere that accompanies the procession as it winds through the village alleys.
The liturgical program unfolds in the days leading up to the feast with the triduum and evening masses in the Mother Church. May 20th is the culminating day: the solemn mass in honor of the patron saint and the long procession that, crossing the streets and squares of the center, carries the statues of Saint Eustace and his family among the crowd of the faithful. It is the most intense and well-attended moment, followed by thousands of Ischitella natives, including those who have emigrated, who return to the town specifically for this occasion.
The sacred dimension is complemented by civic and popular celebrations: artistic illuminations along the main street, the brass band with traditional concerts, market stalls, and, in the evening, shows in Piazza De Vera D'Aragona with artists and tribute bands that bring the town to life until late at night. In recent years, the final evening has hosted major musical performances highly anticipated by the Gargano public. The festivities conclude with the unmissable fireworks display, a grand finale that illuminates the sky over the village.
Experiencing the festival of Saint Eustace is also an opportunity to discover Ischitella, a medieval village perched between the greenery of the Gargano National Park and the waters of Lake Varano. A few kilometers away, the seaside hamlet of Foce Varano preserves a gastronomic tradition linked to lagoon fish, while the hinterland offers olive groves, forests, and views of the Adriatic. The patronal feast is the best time to capture the authentic soul of this corner of Apulia.
In 2026, Ischitella renewed its Solemnity of Saint Eustace the Martyr on May 20th, with the triduum and evening masses held in the days prior at the Mother Church. The official program for the patronal festivities was released at the beginning of May by the organizing committee.
As per tradition, the day of May 20th reached its climax with the solemn mass and the long procession carrying the statues of Saint Eustace, his wife Saint Theopista, and their children Theopistus and Agapitus through the streets of the center, which were decorated in red. The civic festival enlivened Piazza De Vera D'Aragona with illuminations, a brass band, and evening shows, before the customary final fireworks display.
The detailed program with times and artists was released by the festival committee in the official flyer in early May 2026.
Ischitella can be reached by car via the SS89 Garganica road; the nearest train station is served by the Ferrovie del Gargano, while the reference airports are Bari-Palese and Foggia-Gino Lisa. During the festival, the historic center is largely pedestrianized: it is recommended to park in the outer areas and walk to the Mother Church and Piazza De Vera D'Aragona.
The solemn day is May 20th, preceded by the triduum and evening masses. Civic events and concerts are concentrated on the evening of May 20th.
The procession, religious celebrations, and shows in the square are free and open to everyone.
