The patronal feast of Vico del Gargano, in the heart of the Gargano
The San Rocco Festival is the most anticipated religious and popular event of the summer in Vico del Gargano, one of the most charming villages in the province of Foggia, nestled in the heart of the Gargano promontory in Puglia. For a few days in mid-August, the entire town pauses to pay homage to San Rocco, invoked for centuries as a protector against epidemics and a figure of great devotion throughout Southern Italy.
The festival is rooted in ancient tradition: records of the cult of San Rocco in Vico del Gargano date back to the 17th century, and the event still maintains a strong bond with nearby Peschici, with whom the village shares a devotion to the pilgrim saint.
The most solemn moment is the processions. An initial procession winds through the secondary alleys and the characteristic medieval historic center, passing under arches and up stairways; a second, more formal procession travels along the main streets, accompanied by civil, military, and religious authorities and a vast crowd of faithful. The statues of the Madonna and San Rocco are carried on shoulders in an atmosphere of reflection and participation that involves entire families, many of whom return from abroad specifically for the occasion.
Alongside the religious program, the San Rocco Festival offers a festive and spectacular side. The evenings are enlivened by brass band concerts from the «A.F. Nardini» Band of Vico del Gargano, by illuminations lighting up the squares, and by pop music concerts featuring national guests. The festivities always conclude with a fireworks display, with pyrotechnics coloring the Gargano sky and traditional firecrackers marking the key moments.
The San Rocco Festival is part of the rich Estate Vichese (Vico Summer) calendar, a series of events bringing music, theater, traditions, and culture to Vico del Gargano from June through the end of August. It is the ideal opportunity for visitors to discover an authentic village—the famous «Village of Love», also known for its cult of Saint Valentine—and to experience the hospitality and flavors of Gargano gastronomy, including olive oil, citrus fruits, and traditional rustic dishes.
Organized by the San Rocco Festival Committee with the support of the Municipality of Vico del Gargano, the festival unites the sacred and the secular every year in an event that is simultaneously a religious rite, a collective memory, and a grand community celebration.
The 2026 San Rocco Festival enlivens Vico del Gargano from August 16th to 19th, confirming itself as one of the highlights of the Gargano summer and the Estate Vichese, the series of events bringing dozens of happenings to the village in the province of Foggia.
The program alternates between religious and festive dimensions: processions wind through the alleys of the historic center and the main streets of the town, accompanied by authorities and the «A.F. Nardini» Band of Vico del Gargano. There will be illuminations, concerts in the square, and traditional firecrackers. The grand finale is entrusted to the fireworks display.
The closing evening of August 19th will host a concert by Giardino dei Semplici, a historic Italian pop band, organized by the San Rocco Festival Committee.
The detailed program with times and locations will be released by the San Rocco Festival Committee and the Municipality of Vico del Gargano in the days leading up to the festival.
Vico del Gargano is located on the Gargano promontory, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale or Foggia exit), continuing along the SS693 and the Gargano road network. The nearest train station is served by Ferrovie del Gargano; the reference airports are Bari and Foggia-Gino Lisa.
The festival takes place in mid-August, around August 16th, the liturgical feast day of San Rocco. The 2026 edition is scheduled from August 16th to 19th.
Processions, square concerts, and the fireworks display are free of charge. It is recommended to arrive early to attend the processions and to book accommodation in advance, given the high tourist season in the Gargano.
