The grand summer patronal feast of Vico del Gargano, blending faith, brass bands, and fireworks
Every July, the village of Vico del Gargano, nestled between the sea and the Foresta Umbra in the province of Foggia, gathers around the Madonna del Carmine, one of the deepest devotions of the Gargano community. The Madonna del Carmine Festival is much more than a religious anniversary: it is a moment of memory, identity, and belonging that unites entire generations and draws back emigrants, relatives, and tourists from all over Puglia.
The 2026 edition holds special significance. On Sunday, July 5th, the sacred icon of the Madonna del Carmine, having undergone a delicate restoration, returns to the Chiesa del Carmine: after the Holy Rosary and the Eucharistic Celebration, a suggestive candlelight procession accompanies the image for its solemn enthronement. A moment of great emotion for the Confraternity of Discalced Carmelites, guardians of the tradition alongside the Festival Committee.
From July 7th to 15th, the community prepares with the novena, marked by the Holy Rosary, the Novena prayers, and Holy Mass. The heart of the festival is July 16th, the day of the liturgical feast, featuring Solemn Mass, the profession of faith by the confreres, and the grand evening procession that carries the Sacred Icon through the streets of the historic center, amidst illuminations and the participation of the entire town.
The secular program on July 16th and 17th is entrusted to the Premiato Storico Gran Concerto Bandistico "F. Fenaroli" Cittร di Lanciano, conducted by Maestro Rocco Eletto, with evening concerts in Piazza Carmine, joined by the local Vico del Gargano town band. On the evening of July 18th, in Piazza Croci, the grand musical show features Carlo Marrale and Silvia Mezzanotte, historic voices of Matia Bazar, in a concert dedicated to the hits that defined Italian music.
The festival is also the ideal opportunity to discover Vico del Gargano, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, with its medieval alleys, the famous Vicolo del Bacio, and the unique landscape of the Gargano National Park. Between the sacred and the popular, the Madonna del Carmine Festival tells the authentic soul of this corner of Puglia, where devotion intertwines with conviviality, local gastronomy, and village festivities.
The festival opens on Sunday, July 5th, with the return of the restored sacred icon to the Chiesa del Carmine, accompanied by a candlelight procession and solemn enthronement. The novena of preparation takes place from July 7th to 15th. The highlight days are July 16th, 17th, and 18th, featuring the procession on the day of the feast, concerts by the "F. Fenaroli" band of Lanciano, and the concert by Carlo Marrale and Silvia Mezzanotte, before the grand pyrotechnic finale.
Vico del Gargano can be reached by car via the SS693 and SS89 Garganica roads; the nearest motorway exit is Poggio Imperiale (A14). The reference railway stations are San Severo and Foggia, connected to the Gargano area by bus lines and the Ferrovia del Gargano railway.
Religious events are concentrated in the Chiesa del Carmine and the historic center; evening concerts are held in Piazza Carmine, the grand show on July 18th in Piazza Croci, and the fireworks in Piazza San Domenico.
Free admission to all events. It is recommended to arrive early for the evening events in the square and to take advantage of your stay to visit the Foresta Umbra and the nearby beaches of the Gargano.
