The August 15th celebration blending faith, brass bands, and fireworks over the sea in the Gargano village
August 15th is the most significant day of the summer in Peschici, one of the most charming villages on the Gargano promontory in the province of Foggia (Puglia). On this date, the town celebrates the Madonna dell'Assunta alongside San Rocco, uniting the solemnity of the Assumption of Mary with the popular Ferragosto tradition. It is a festival rooted in the centuries-old devotion of the Peschici community, still attracting residents, returning emigrants, and thousands of tourists who flock to the beaches and traditional trabucchi along the coast.
The centerpiece is the procession, which departs from the Mother Church in the historic center on the evening of August 15th. The statues of the Madonna dell'Assunta and San Rocco are carried on shoulders through the white alleys of the village, accompanied by the Peschici City Band and a long procession of the faithful. The sight of the parade passing between houses overlooking the cliffs, with the bay in the background, is one of the most cherished images of local tradition. Devotion to San Rocco, the protector invoked against epidemics, has been paired with the Marian cult of the Assunta for centuries.
The day concludes late at night with a fireworks display over the harbor of Peschici: the pyrotechnics reflect off the sea and are visible from the marina, the beaches, and the viewpoints of the historic center. It is the spectacular finale of the Peschici Ferragosto and one of the most anticipated moments for those spending their holidays on the Gargano.
The Assunta celebrations are part of the rich summer schedule of the Municipality of Peschici, known as L'estate Addosso. From June to September, this program brings dozens of events to the town, including concerts, musical tributes, literary reviews, tastings, and the 'Notte Bianca' (White Night). Many of the season's highlights are concentrated around August 15th, making Ferragosto the beating heart of summer in this Gargano village.
For Ferragosto 2026, Peschici renews its most traditional festival: on August 15th, the Gargano village celebrates the Madonna dell'Assunta and San Rocco with an evening procession and a grand fireworks display over the sea. The event is the highlight of the L'estate Addosso festival, the dense summer calendar promoted by the Municipality of Peschici.
Many seasonal events are concentrated around this date: musical tributes, the Gargano Summer Festival, and the Notte Bianca will enliven the historic center and Piazza Pertini throughout the August evenings.
The complete summer program in Peschici includes about forty events from June to September.
