The patronal feast of Ischitella: faith, illuminations, and music in the Gargano

The Feast of Maria SS. Assunta and San Rocco is the main religious and civil celebration in Ischitella, a village on the Gargano promontory overlooking Lake Varano, in the Province of Foggia. Celebrated in mid-August, it combines the solemnity of the Assumption (August 15) with the memory of Saint Roch (August 16), the two patron saints venerated by the Ischitella community. It is a time when the town comes together, also drawing back many emigrants who return for the summer.
The preparation begins with the novena at the Mother Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the heart of the town's religious life, where the Rosary and Mass are held for nine days. On the solemn days, the statues of the patron saints are placed at the sides of the high altar for the veneration of the faithful, before being carried in procession along the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the band and the participation of the entire community.
One of the most evocative features of the feast is the illuminations: the streets of Ischitella transform into an enchanted path made of arches, rose windows, and wooden structures lit by thousands of lightbulbs, with the large pediment in the square serving as the beating heart of the scenery. The town's band tradition, documented since at least the 19th century, lives on in brass band concerts with symphonic marches performed by local ensembles, including the band named after the Ischitella philosopher Pietro Giannone. Alongside the devotional aspect, there is a rich civil program with musical shows and evening concerts in the square, which in recent years have brought well-known names from the Italian scene to Ischitella.
As per tradition, the feast culminates with the fireworks display that lights up the sky over Ischitella with an explosion of colors, greeted by the crowd gathered in the historic center. It is the most anticipated moment, which solemnly closes days lived intensely between sacred rites, music, and conviviality.
Experiencing the patronal feast is also an opportunity to discover Ischitella and its territory: the perched historic center, the coast and Lake Varano, and the nature of the Gargano National Park. The event is organized by the Municipality of Ischitella together with the Festival Committee, which coordinates the religious and civil program every year with the contribution of volunteers and the community.
