The solemn festivities for the patron saint of Peschici, blending faith, tradition, and spectacle on the Gargano coast
In the heart of the Gargano summer, the village of Peschici, in the province of Foggia, experiences its most intense days of the year with the solemn festivities in honor of Saint Elijah the Prophet, the city's patron saint. For a few days, the maze of white alleys overlooking the Adriatic fills with illuminations, brass bands, the scent of street food, and that ancient devotion that unites entire generations. It is the festival that, more than any other, captures the soul of this corner of Puglia.
The devotion to Saint Elijah in Peschici has remote origins, linked to a 16th-century legend. It is said that during a year of famine and drought, an immense cloud of locusts threatened to destroy crops and vineyards. The inhabitants carried the statue of the prophet in procession, and suddenly, a powerful wind blew the insects toward the sea, ending the plague. Since then, Saint Elijah has been venerated as the protector of the community, and the Mother Church was dedicated to him. The famous handkerchief ritual, where handkerchiefs are rubbed against the saint's face during the procession, still testifies to this deep bond today.
The most anticipated moment is the procession of the patron saint's statue, which winds solemnly through the streets of the historic center, packed with faithful and visitors, on the day of the feast. It is accompanied by confraternities, the town band, and, along the route, the thunderous firecracker batteries that announce the saint's passage. The religious festivities are preceded by the novena, which gathers the community in the Mother Church in the preceding days for the rosary, Eucharistic celebrations, and prayers.
Alongside the religious dimension, the Saint Elijah the Prophet Festival Committee, with the patronage of the Municipality of Peschici, organizes a rich civil program every year: concerts by major names in Italian music in the town squares, musical evenings, shows, and entertainment for families and children. The grand finale is entrusted to the fireworks, launched from the harbor and the pier: a pyrotechnic display that reflects on the water and can be admired from the village's viewpoints, closing the festival in a blaze of light.
Experiencing the Feast of Saint Elijah means discovering Peschici in its most authentic guise: not just one of the most beloved seaside destinations on the Gargano, but a community that proudly guards its roots. Between the sacred and the profane, secular tradition and great live music, it is the perfect opportunity to combine a vacation on the Apulian coast with an experience of genuine folklore.
The Solemn Festivities of the Patronal Feast of Saint Elijah the Prophet return to Peschici from July 18 to 21, 2026, organized by the Saint Elijah the Prophet Festival Committee with the patronage of the Municipality of Peschici. The preparatory novena begins on July 11 in the Mother Church. The religious heart of the festival is the procession of the patron saint's statue through the alleys of the historic center, accompanied by the band and traditional firecracker batteries. The 2026 civil program is embellished by the major concert of Michele Zarrillo.
The rest of the civil program and detailed schedules will be announced by the Festival Committee in the days leading up to the event.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Peschici (FG), on the Gargano. The procession starts from the Mother Church; concerts are held in the main town squares (including Piazza Pertini), and fireworks are launched from the harbor.
By car: Peschici is reached via the SS89 Garganica road. By train: Foggia or Rodi Garganico station, then bus connections to Peschici. Nearest airport: Bari-Palese. In summer, maritime connections are active along the Gargano coast.
Religious events and concerts in the square are free to attend. As this is peak beach season, it is recommended to book accommodation well in advance and to reach the center on foot, given the traffic restrictions during the festival.
