The religious and civic festival held on July 16th in Ischitella, in the Gargano region

Every year, around July 16th, the historic center of Ischitella—a picturesque village in the Gargano area of the Foggia province, overlooking Lake Varano and the Adriatic Sea—comes together for the Madonna del Carmine Festival. While not the town's main patronal feast (which is dedicated to Saint Eustace the Martyr), it is one of the community's most heartfelt traditions: the Virgin of Mount Carmel is venerated as the co-patron of the Confraternity of Sant'Eustachio and the patroness of bricklayers, a trade historically widespread in this corner of Puglia.
The celebration centers on the Church of Sant'Eustachio, the starting and ending point for all liturgical events. The day of July 16th is marked by masses in honor of the Madonna, held in the morning and evening, and culminates in a solemn procession that carries the statue of the Virgin through the streets and alleys of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful and members of the confraternity. It is the most moving and well-attended moment, showcasing the intensity of local popular devotion.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival features civic and musical events that bring the village to life. The festivities traditionally open with firecrackers and a parade through town by the brass band—in recent years, the "Pietro Giannone" municipal band—filling the streets of Ischitella with music. In the evening, upon the return of the procession, the village sky lights up with a fireworks display, while the church square often hosts concerts and musical performances that complement the celebration.
The Madonna del Carmine Festival in Ischitella is an authentic example of Apulian and Gargano popular religiosity: a recurrence organized with care by the Confraternity of Sant'Eustachio Martire, with the support of the Municipality of Ischitella, which attracts residents, returning emigrants, and visitors every summer. Those in the Gargano in mid-July will find the perfect opportunity to discover a quiet village still deeply connected to its traditions, far from the crowds of the more famous seaside resorts in the Foggia province.
Nestled on the first heights of the Gargano promontory, Ischitella overlooks the plains and the nearby Lake Varano, one of the most evocative natural destinations in northern Puglia. The village, with its historic center made of staircases, arches, and stone houses, offers visitors the ideal setting to experience a genuine local festival, where the sacred and the profane meet in the name of the Madonna del Carmine.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna del Carmine Festival in Ischitella (Foggia province) is expected, as per tradition, around July 16th, the liturgical feast day of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel. As of the writing of this page, the official dates and the detailed program have not yet been released by the Confraternity of Sant'Eustachio Martire, which organizes the festival with the support of the Municipality.
Based on previous editions, the program is expected to include religious moments—masses and the solemn procession of the Madonna's statue through the streets of the historic center—and civic events, starting with firecrackers and a parade by the local brass band, concluding with a fireworks display. The official program will be updated as soon as it is published.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Ischitella (FG), centered around the Church of Sant'Eustachio, from which the procession departs through the town streets.
Ischitella is located in the Gargano area, in the province of Foggia. By car: take the A14 motorway to the Poggio Imperiale exit, then follow the SS693 towards Gargano/Vico del Gargano. The nearest train station is Foggia, which is connected to the Gargano by bus services.
The festival is traditionally celebrated around July 16th, the liturgical feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel.
All religious and civic events are free to attend.
