The festival of returning emigrants, blending faith and sea in Rodi Garganico
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The San Rocco Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in Rodi Garganico, an elegant seaside village overlooking the Gulf of Gargano, in the Province of Foggia, in the heart of Apulia. Traditionally celebrated in the third week of August, it is fondly called the emigrants' festival: it is the celebration for all the locals who, scattered across Italy and the world, return home during these days to reconnect with their roots, their families, and their community.
The heart of the celebration is the veneration of San Rocco, the pilgrim from Montpellier and one of the most beloved saints in Southern Italian tradition, known as the protector against epidemics and diseases. The most solemn moment is the procession of the saint's statue, which winds through the historic center and along the seafront, accompanied by the town band and the faithful. The religious dimension has always been intertwined with the community spirit, in a ritual that renews the town's identity every year.
Alongside the religious program, the festival offers a rich calendar of secular events that bring the Tourist Port and the village's main squares to life: concerts by national artists, performances, open-air cinema, and family entertainment. The grand finale features the traditional fireworks display over the sea, which illuminates the Gargano coast and draws thousands of people, including residents, returning emigrants, and tourists vacationing on the coast.
Nestled between the sea and the Mediterranean scrub, Rodi Garganico is one of the pearls of the Gargano promontory, famous for its citrus groves, golden beaches, and the port from which ferries depart for the Tremiti Islands. Experiencing the San Rocco Festival means immersing yourself in authentic Gargano hospitality and discovering a tradition that, between the sacred and the profane, tells the story of the community's deep bond with its patron saint and the sea.
The program for the 2026 edition of the San Rocco Festival in Rodi Garganico has not yet been announced. Based on the tradition of recent years, the festivities are held in the second half of August and include the procession of the statue of San Rocco through the streets of the village, concerts and shows at the Tourist Port, and the customary fireworks display over the sea. The final dates and program will be published by the Municipality of Rodi Garganico and the Festival Committee closer to the event, as part of the Rodi Summer calendar.
By car: take the A14 motorway, exit at Poggio Imperiale, then follow the state road to Rodi Garganico. By train: the Rodi Garganico station is served by Ferrovie del Gargano, with connections from San Severo. By plane: the nearest airports are Bari and Foggia (Gino Lisa).
The festival takes place in the second half of August. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: we recommend checking the Rodi Summer calendar on the official channels of the Municipality of Rodi Garganico and the Festival Committee.
Most secular events are free of charge. During high season, it is advisable to book accommodation in the village or surrounding areas well in advance and to arrive at the Tourist Port early on the evenings of concerts and fireworks.
