Every year, towards the end of August, the small village of Foce Varano—part of the municipality of Ischitella in the province of Foggia—celebrates the Crocifisso del Lago Festival. It is a popular celebration deeply rooted in the water: the fresh water of Lake Varano, Italy's largest coastal lagoon, and the salt water of the nearby Adriatic Sea. The event unites religious devotion with the memory of the Gargano fishing community, set against one of the most beautiful landscapes in the region.

Devotion between lake and sea

At the heart of the festival is the Santissimo Crocifisso del Lago, whose image is kept near the Annunziata Church, overlooking the lake shores. The tradition stems from the ancient bond between the community and the fishing trade: once, it was the fishermen who transported the sacred Crucifix by boat, departing from the Foce Varano pier. From this legacy comes the most anticipated moment of the festival, the procession that accompanies the Crucifix along the lake shores to the boarding point, with blessings offered to the waters, the fields, and those who live by the lake and sea.

The summer version of the festival, celebrated in Foce Varano, has established itself over recent decades as an event capable of reuniting the entire community: not only residents, but also emigrants returning to their hometown for the summer and the many tourists who choose the Ischitella coastline for their holidays.

Music, bands, and fireworks on the Gargano

Alongside religious rites, the festival offers a rich entertainment program. Evenings come alive with popular and Italian music concerts in Piazza del Porto, while during the day, the town band parade announces the festivities through the village streets. The grand finale is the midnight fireworks display, which reflects on the lake waters and is considered one of the most impressive in the entire Gargano area.

Foce Varano and Lake Varano

The festival is also an opportunity to discover a charming corner of Puglia: Lake Varano, separated from the sea by a thin strip of sand (the Isola di Varano), is a unique ecosystem rich in birdlife and history. Foce Varano, with its small harbor and fishing tradition, represents the heart of this lake and maritime identity that the festival celebrates and passes down from generation to generation.
