Three days of flavor, culture, and nature in the heart of the Sicani Mountains
The Sicani Wild Asparagus Festival is one of the most anticipated food and wine events of the spring in the province of Agrigento. It takes place in Sant'Angelo Muxaro, a small village of just over a thousand inhabitants perched in the Sicani Mountains, celebrating a wild product that grows in the surrounding countryside: wild asparagus, known for its intense, slightly bitter flavor and its role as a staple of local peasant cuisine.
The heart of the event is Piazza Umberto I, where food stalls and markets featuring local crafts and products are set up. Over the three days, the program features show cooking, guided tastings, cooking workshops, and samplings that highlight wild asparagus in numerous recipes: from frittatas and pasta dishes to creative reinterpretations by local chefs. Visitors can also explore stalls from local Sicani producers, offering traditional cheeses, olive oil, wine, and sweets.
The festival is more than just gastronomy: the program offers nature excursions to discover wild herbs, guided walks, e-bike tours, and outdoor activities in the Platani River valley, organized by local associations such as Val di Kam and Sicani Outdoor. A major draw is the visit to the famous necropolis and the so-called Prince's Tomb, which make Sant'Angelo Muxaro a site of extraordinary archaeological value, alongside guided tours of the village led by local youth.
Alongside the stalls, there are conferences on agro-ecological transition, book presentations, art exhibitions, and musical entertainment with local bands and artists. Evenings conclude with concerts that bring the square to life, creating a popular festive atmosphere that draws residents and visitors from all over Sicily.
Organized by the Municipality of Sant'Angelo Muxaro in collaboration with the Val di Kam association and local stakeholders, the event is free to attend and offers the perfect opportunity to explore the Agrigento hinterland, far from the beaten tourist paths. With its authentic flavors, Sicani Mountain landscapes, and archaeological treasures, the Sicani Wild Asparagus Festival showcases a small village in the province of Agrigento and the rural identity of inland Sicily.
