Christmas among the alleys of Sciascia's village

Vaneddra in Festa is the Christmas event that, in the heart of winter, illuminates the historic center of Racalmuto, a small village in the province of Agrigento, Sicily, made famous by the writer Leonardo Sciascia, who renamed it "Regalpetra". The local dialect name refers to the vaneddre, the characteristic alleys that climb between the stone houses: it is right here, among arches and courtyards, that the Racalmuto community builds its Christmas every year.
The festival begins as a walking route that stretches from the Chiaramontano Castle to the square in front, then branches out into the neighboring districts. Along the way, visitors encounter artisanal nativity scenes, scenic installations, and the typical 'courtyards of hospitality', where families open their homes to the community. There is also a living re-enactment of the Holy Family searching for lodging, complete with a costumed encampment, bringing the atmosphere of the Nativity to the village streets.
Promoted by the Pro Loco of Racalmuto with the involvement of local associations and youth, Vaneddra in Festa is much more than a Christmas event: it is an opportunity to rediscover and revitalize the most hidden corners of the village, breathing life back into the historic center's alleys. The event is also ideally linked to the summer edition "Vaneddra in Festa in the Villages of Regalpetra", dedicated to local culture and Sciascia's memory, confirming the deep bond between Racalmuto and its traditions.
At the moment, the Pro Loco of Racalmuto has not yet released the official dates or the detailed program for the 2026 edition of Vaneddra in Festa. Following the tradition of previous years, the Christmas event is expected to return in December, with the usual route through the alleys of the historic center from the Chiaramontano Castle to the square, enriched by artisanal nativity scenes, novenas, Holy Family re-enactments, and local food tastings. The program will be announced by the organizers on official channels closer to the event.
Racalmuto is located in the hinterland of Agrigento, in Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the SS640 (Agrigento-Caltanissetta) taking the exit towards Racalmuto. The Racalmuto train station is served by the Agrigento-Caltanissetta line.
The event takes place during the Christmas season, typically in December, in the town's historic center.
The event takes place in the public spaces of the village and is free to attend.
