About Cotaccalla and Immaculate Conception Bonfire

Every year, around the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th, Campofranco renews one of its most cherished traditions: the Cotaccalla Festival and the evocative Vampa dell'Immacolata. A massive bonfire is lit in Piazza Santa Rita, illuminating the winter evening, while the community gathers to share cotaccallaโ€”a traditional circular bread served hot, seasoned with oil, salt, pepper, and cheese or ricotta. A celebration of faith, local flavor, and identity in the heart of the Caltanissetta province.

A living tradition in the heart of Campofranco

The Cotaccalla Festival and Immaculate Conception Bonfire is one of the most distinctive winter events in Campofranco, a small town in the province of Caltanissetta, Sicily. The event takes place around the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th, blending religious devotion, gastronomy, and the warmth of village conviviality. The heart of the festivities is Piazza Santa Rita, located in the district that also gives its name to the association that has preserved this tradition for years.

The Vampa dell'Immacolata

The Vampa is a massive bonfire that, once lit at dusk, reaches several meters in height, casting a glow over the square. According to popular belief, the fire holds symbolic value: it burns away bad omens and entrusts the community's protection to the Immaculate Conception. It is an ancient ritual that has marked the beginning of the Christmas season in Campofranco for generations, drawing locals and visitors alike to the flames.

Cotaccalla, the bread of the festival

The culinary highlight of the festival is cotaccalla, a circular bread from the local peasant tradition, seasoned with olive oil, salt, pepper, and cheese or ricotta. Its very name suggests it should be served and enjoyed cotta e calda (cooked and hot), straight from the oven. Originally a homemade staple for local families, the cotaccalla has evolved into the star of a public celebration, offered and shared in the square during the festivities dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

A community celebration

The event is organized by the Municipality of Campofranco, the Pro Loco, and the young volunteers of the Associazione Giovani di Santa Rita, who are committed to preserving this popular heritage. Alongside the bonfire and the tasting of cotaccalla, the program features entertainment, including dance performances, musical shows, and cabaret, with the participation of civil, military, and religious authorities. It is a perfect opportunity to rediscover the values of tradition, faith, and the deep bond with the territory of the Nisseno area.
