The Guasteddra Festival is one of the most cherished events in the Christmas calendar of Mussomeli, a town in the province of Caltanissetta in the heart of Sicily. Established in 2015 by the local Pro Loco and the municipal administration, the event takes place every year around December 7th and 8th, coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and ideally marks the beginning of the festivities in this Sicilian village.
The guasteddra (or guastedda) is a sweet flatbread made with simple, wholesome ingredients: flour, water, yeast, and salt. Round and flattened in shape, it is fried in hot oil and served warm, topped with honey or sugar. This is an ancient recipe, passed down through generations by the housewives of Mussomeli, who once dedicated the entire day of the Immaculate Conception's eve to its preparation, sharing it with family and neighbors in a festive atmosphere.
For two days, the historic center, and specifically Piazza Umberto I, transforms into a large Christmas village. Typical festival offerings include:
The event is often accompanied by a conference dedicated to grain culture and the tradition of the guasteddra, titled "from the grain to the guasteddra," highlighting the festival's deep connection to the local rural culture.
Over the years, the Guasteddra Festival has attracted an ever-growing audience, earning the prestigious Quality Festival (Sagra di Qualitร ) recognition from the UNPLI (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy). This title rewards the authenticity of the product, the promotion of local traditions, and the quality of hospitality, confirming Mussomeli as a must-visit destination for those seeking the authentic roots of inland Sicily during the Advent period.
Dominated by the famous Manfredonico Castle perched on a rocky cliff, Mussomeli also offers visitors the chance to discover a village rich in history and tradition in the heart of the Caltanissetta province. The Guasteddra Festival is much more than a food fair: it is an opportunity to experience the Sicilian Christmas atmosphere and rediscover a simple yet iconic recipe.
