Three days of faith and flavor in honor of Aragona's patron saint

The Feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer is one of the most cherished events in Aragona, a town in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. Dedicated to the town's patron saint—protector of the countryside, livestock, and specifically the local butchers—the celebration traditionally takes place on the second Sunday of September. It spans three days, where religious services and the solemn procession of the saint's statue through the streets alternate with moments of celebration, music, and gastronomy.
The secular highlight of the festivities is the Sausage Festival, one of the most renowned food festivals in the Agrigento area, organized for over thirty years with the support of the Aragona Pro Loco. Along Via Roma and Via Garibaldi in the historic center, local butchers set up stalls where visitors can enjoy the famous sausage sandwich.
The Aragona sausage is a true symbol of local identity: it is hand-beaten twice and seasoned with only two ingredients, salt and black pepper, which give it a particularly spicy and savory profile. It is then grilled in traditional baracche (stalls), using techniques passed down for over a century, dating back to when production began in September as the summer heat started to fade.
The stalls offer more than just sausage: the sandwiches are accompanied by local wines and traditional Sicilian products, creating a festive atmosphere that draws visitors from across the province. The tastings are complemented by folk performances, concerts, and entertainment that keep the evenings lively until late.
Oral tradition tells of a curious rivalry: legend has it that Aragona and the neighboring town of Favara once vied for the right to celebrate Saint Vincent Ferrer. Aragona prevailed, but took on the obligation to celebrate the patron saint in grand style every year. This explains the intensity and continuity of a festival that remains one of the most important identity-defining moments for the Aragonese community.
The festival is part of the broader calendar of summer and autumn events in the Municipality of Aragona, located just a few kilometers from the famous Valley of the Temples, making it an ideal opportunity to combine devotion, folklore, and gastronomy.
The program for the 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer and Sausage Festival in Aragona has not yet been published. Following tradition, the festival is expected to take place on the second Sunday of September, featuring three days of religious and popular celebrations: the procession of the patron saint's statue, stalls from local butchers serving hand-beaten sausage grilled in traditional stalls, tastings of local wines and products, folk shows, and evening concerts. Precise dates, artists, and details will be communicated by the organizers on official channels.
Aragona is located in the province of Agrigento, along the SS189 road. By car, the recommended exit is from Agrigento (approx. 15 km). The Aragona-Caldare railway station is served by the Palermo-Agrigento line. The nearest airport is Palermo (Punta Raisi), about a 2-hour drive away.
Access to the festival and the food stalls is free. Sausage tastings and other local products can be purchased directly at the butchers' stalls along Via Roma and Via Garibaldi.
The festival stalls generally open in the evening. It is recommended to check the updated dates and program on the official channels of the Aragona Pro Loco and the Municipality.
