Every year, during the Christmas season, the historic center of Grotte, a small town in the province of Agrigento in the heart of Sicily, comes alive with one of the community's most cherished events: the Living Nativity. The display takes place in Piazza Renzo Collura, also known to locals as Piazza Fonte, where the village's natural scenery becomes the backdrop for a Nativity re-enactment featuring costumed characters.
The initiative, organized by the Muoviti Grotte association, invites visitors of all ages to walk among scenes and characters depicting the Nativity, recreating the atmosphere of a bygone era. Amidst ancient crafts, performers, and meticulously detailed settings, visitors are guided along a suggestive path that culminates in the representation of the birth of Jesus, following a tradition deeply rooted in Sicilian villages.
The Living Nativity is more than just a visual experience. Along the path, it is possible to sample typical local gastronomic products, prepared according to traditional recipes. The atmosphere is made even more authentic by the Novene and Christmas carols that have always been part of Grotte's folk culture, performed live throughout the evening.
The living nativity is one of the most deeply rooted expressions of the Sicilian Christmas: throughout the province of Agrigento, numerous towns transform squares, neighborhoods, and ancient districts into small Bethlehems between December and January. In Grotte, the event has an intimate and popular character, strongly tied to the town's identity and the desire to rediscover authentic Christmas traditions by combining visual, culinary, and musical elements of the local culture.
The program and dates for the 2026 edition of the Grotte Living Nativity have not yet been announced. Following the tradition of previous years, the event is expected to take place during the Christmas season in Piazza Renzo Collura (Piazza Fonte), featuring living Nativity scenes, tastings of local products, and Christmas carols. Information will be updated as soon as the Muoviti Grotte association and the Municipality of Grotte publish the official calendar.
The Living Nativity is held in Piazza Renzo Collura (Piazza Fonte), in the center of Grotte (AG), Sicily.
