The Schützen festival in Termeno, featuring parades, brass bands, and South Tyrolean traditions
The Schützenfest Tramin is the traditional festival organized by the Schützenkompanie Tramin, the local company of marksmen (Schützen) from Termeno sulla strada del vino (Tramin an der Weinstraße), a municipality in the province of Bolzano in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Located in the heart of the South Tyrolean Lowlands, along the famous South Tyrolean Wine Road, the village of Termeno hosts this two-day September event that showcases the historical and cultural identity of South Tyrol.
The Schützen are the marksmen companies of the historical Tyrol, heirs to the ancient territorial militias and guardians of traditions linked to the figure of Andreas Hofer and the defense of their homeland. Today, these companies primarily function as cultural associations that, through their historical uniforms, sashes, feathered hats, and flags, keep their customs, language, and sense of belonging alive. The Schützenfest is the moment when this tradition is presented to the public in all its solemnity and joy.
The festival takes place over two days at the Festplatz, the covered festival pavilion in Termeno, ensuring the event is protected from the elements. Saturday afternoon kicks off with a parade of the marksmen company and the local band from the town hall to the pavilion, followed by an evening of musical entertainment that continues late into the night. Sunday is dedicated to the Frühschoppen, the traditional morning musical aperitif featuring guest bands, while the afternoon sees the grand parade of the marksmen accompanied by brass bands, followed by live music until the evening.
The heart of the Schützenfest lies in its folk music and conviviality: brass bands, folk groups, and youth ensembles take turns on stage, while food stalls offer typical South Tyrolean specialties, ranging from traditional Tyrolean dishes to local wines, including the aromatic Gewürztraminer. It is a unique opportunity to experience South Tyrolean traditions up close in a festive atmosphere open to residents, curious visitors, and travelers alike.
For those visiting the South Tyrolean Wine Road, the Schützenfest in Termeno is an authentic way to discover the most traditional side of the province of Bolzano, far from the typical tourist trails. Costume parades, ceremonial salutes, brass band music, and local delicacies create a weekend that captures the bilingual soul and the proud spirit of the South Tyrolean Lowlands.
The 2026 edition takes place on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13 at the covered Festplatz in Termeno sulla strada del vino. The program kicks off on Saturday at 5:00 PM with the parade of the marksmen company and the band from the town hall to the pavilion, followed by an evening of music and festivities until approximately 11:30 PM. Sunday opens at 10:30 AM with the traditional Frühschoppen accompanied by the Musikverein Berg and the Jugendkapelle Tramin-Kurtatsch-Penon; at 3:00 PM, the grand parade of the marksmen with the bands takes place, followed by the continuation of the festival with live music until approximately 10:30 PM.
