The festival of Erbazzone Reggiano IGP in Montecavolo
The Scarpasoun Festival is one of the most cherished food and wine events in the hills of Reggio Emilia. It takes place in Montecavolo, a hamlet of the Municipality of Quattro Castella, in the heart of the Matildic Lands in the province of Reggio Emilia, in the Emilia-Romagna region. The name refers to "scarpasoun", the Reggiano dialect term for erbazzone, the famous savory pie filled with chard, spinach, Parmesan cheese, and lard, which represents one of the excellences of local cuisine, now recognized as Erbazzone Reggiano IGP.
The event is organized by a close-knit group of volunteers led by the symbolic figures of the event, Nonna Lea and Nonno Pepi, with the patronage of the Municipality of Quattro Castella. The heart of the festival is the erbazzone workshop, where the savory pie is prepared in all its variations throughout the day, from the classic version to the one with onions, to accompany the tastings in the square.
The program alternates gastronomic moments and shows. Among the most popular initiatives are the Magnalonga della Nonna, a food and wine walk through the Matildic hills organized with UISP, and the Mini Erbachef workshop for children aged 3 to 10, who can become chefs for a day and prepare their own erbazzone. The fun "who eats the most erbazzone" competition and the prize for the best themed cartoon are not to be missed. The evenings are enlivened by live tribute concerts and DJ sets, while an artisan market accompanies visitors along the village streets.
The Scarpasoun Festival is not just about taste and fun: the event has a strong charitable vocation and, in its editions, has allocated its entire proceeds to local Reggiano organizations involved in healthcare and volunteering. An event that combines the valorization of a typical IGP product, the identity of the Matildic Lands, and the community spirit of Montecavolo.
The 2026 edition of the Scarpasoun Festival celebrated the prestigious recognition of Erbazzone Reggiano IGP. The festival opened on Saturday, June 6th, with an inaugural parade and official opening in the presence of authorities, followed by a tribute concert to Coldplay. Sunday featured the Magnalonga della Nonna, the Mini Erbachef workshop for the little ones, the "who eats the most erbazzone" competition, and evening concerts. Once again, the proceeds were donated to the Fondazione Grade Onlus โ Amici dell'Ematologia.
All day: erbazzone workshop with continuous tastings and artisan market.
Montecavolo is located along the foothill road connecting Reggio Emilia to the municipalities of the Matildic Lands. By car, it can be reached from Reggio Emilia in about 20 minutes; the most convenient highway exit is Reggio Emilia (A1). The nearest train station is Reggio Emilia, connected by local buses to Quattro Castella.
Admission to the festival is free. Erbazzone tastings and food stands are paid for on-site; some activities (Magnalonga, children's workshop) require a registration fee. It is advisable to book in advance for the Magnalonga.
