Shows and workshops in the open air in the neighborhoods of Reggio Emilia
Estate Popolare is one of the most original cultural experiences in Emilia-Romagna: not a single stage but a widespread review that crosses the public and social housing neighborhoods of Reggio Emilia, in the province of Reggio Emilia. Promoted by Acer (Azienda Casa Emilia-Romagna) and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, Department of Housing, with the support of Iren, the event brings free shows and workshops directly to people's doorsteps, in parks, small squares, and neighborhood houses.
The idea behind Estate Popolare is simple and powerful: culture should not be a privilege for a few, but a good accessible to anyone, especially those living in neighborhoods that are more fragile economically and socially. For this reason, every event is completely free and designed for an audience of all ages, from children to the elderly. The review transforms courtyards and green spaces into open-air stages, intertwining entertainment and social cohesion.
Each edition involves the city's public housing neighborhoods โ including Compagnoni, Fenulli, Pieve Modolena, Quartiere Stazione, rione Don Borghi, Santa Croce, via Fogliani, via Monte San Michele, via Roma, Villa Cella, Villa Sesso, Villaggio Catellani, Villaggio Foscato, and Villaggio Stranieri. The program alternates street theater, contemporary circus, dance, concerts, storytelling, open-air cinema, games, and street sports, as well as numerous creative workshops.
The strength of Estate Popolare lies in its network: the program is created in collaboration with dozens of cultural and associative realities in Reggio Emilia, including Arci Reggio Emilia, Associazione 5T, Cinqueminuti, Circolo Arci Picnic, Compagnia del Buco, Dinamico Festival, Reggio Film Festival, and Teatro dell'Orsa, with the support of libraries, neighborhood houses, and clubs. Often, the shows are born from artistic residencies that directly involve residents, making citizens protagonists and not just spectators.
Estate Popolare is the ideal festival for those looking for an authentic community summer in Reggio Emilia: no tickets, no anonymous crowds, but neighborhood evenings where culture becomes an opportunity for neighbors, families, and different generations to meet.
The seventh edition of Estate Popolare offers over 120 free initiatives spread from late May to October 2026 in 14 public housing neighborhoods of Reggio Emilia. The program, promoted by Acer and the Municipality with the support of Iren, intertwines theater, contemporary circus, live music, open-air cinema, and creative workshops, with a strong emphasis on artistic residencies that directly involve neighborhood residents.
The return of artist Alessandro Lucci for a social theater residency in Santa Croce is also expected in September. The complete schedule, continuously updated, is published on estatepopolare.it.
