Eleven days of faith, tradition, and music in Giovinazzo
Every year, in mid-August, Giovinazzo experiences its most intense moment with the Patronal Feast in honor of Maria SS di Corsignano, the city's protector. Located on the Adriatic coast, just a few kilometers from Bari, in the heart of Puglia, Giovinazzo unites around its patron saint with eleven days of religious and secular celebrations that involve the entire community, from the narrow alleys of the old town to the seafront.
At the heart of the festival is the venerated effigy of the Madonna di Corsignano, which arrived in Giovinazzo in the 12th century and is linked to the ancient Casale di Corsignano in the surrounding countryside. Spiritual preparation begins with the novena in the Co-Cathedral, with daily celebrations animated each evening by different parish associations. The religious core of the festival is the solemn procession of the sacred icon through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by brass bands, and the traditional pilgrimage to the Casale di Corsignano, where the image is carried on a flower-adorned cart.
Alongside the sacred rites, the secular program transforms Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II into a grand stage. The festival evenings alternate between brass band concerts in the traditional bandstand, performances by large orchestras, and renowned musical guests. The festivities also feature dazzling illuminations, fireworks launched from the pier over the sea, and evenings dedicated to Apulian folk culture.
Among the most anticipated events is the Historical Pageant organized by the Pro Loco, a costume re-enactment that recreates episodes of the city's history as it parades through the old town. Completing the calendar are the Assunta Fair, the emigrant's evening, and the "Gamberemo" District Palio, a historic competition that fuels festive rivalry between the districts of Giovinazzo.
Organized by the Giovinazzo Patronal Feast Committee, the festival is free to attend and attracts thousands of residents, returning emigrants, and visitors every year. It is the most authentic expression of Giovinazzo's identity, where faith, historical memory, music, and conviviality merge during the warm Apulian August evenings.
The 2026 festival is preceded by the novena in the Co-Cathedral (August 14-22), with daily celebrations at 6:30 AM, 8:30 AM, and 7:30 PM, animated each evening by a different parish association.
Detailed times will be confirmed in the weeks leading up to the festival. Organized by the Giovinazzo Patronal Feast Committee, chaired by Pietro Sifo.
Giovinazzo is located on the SS16 Adriatica road, about 20 km north of Bari. The train station is served by the Adriatic line (Bari-Foggia); by car, take the Giovinazzo exit off the SS16.
Secular events are concentrated in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the historic center; religious celebrations take place in the Co-Cathedral and at the Casale di Corsignano.
All events are free and held outdoors. It is recommended to arrive early for concert evenings and the fireworks display on the seafront.
